3 Overview of Korean War The Forgotten War North Korean armies cross the 38th parallel, dividing North Korea and South Korea. South Korea was not expecting the attack and was caught completely off guard. North Korean armies were easily able to invade South Korea, because the United States had not given South Korea enough weapons, for fear of having South Korea start a war against North Korea. By June 27th, Seoul, the capital of South Korea, was captured. South Koreans panicked as North Korea easily invaded their country.

4 Truman and MacArthur On October 15, 1950, President Truman and General MacArthur met at Wake Island in the mid-pacific Ocean, for a meeting much publicized because of the General's discourteous refusal to meet the President in the US. To President Truman, MacArthur speculated there was little risk of Chinese intervention in Korea. On October 19 th thousands of Chinese troops crossed the Yalu River and entered the War.

5 Stalemate Seeing the presence of the UN forces in North Korea, China sends hundreds of thousands of troops to assist and the UN forces are pushed back to the 38th parallel. 2 years deadlock. The war ends with a cease-fire. No treaty was ever signed. The parallel has been guarded by North Korean and American troops around the clock all year ever since.

6 Overview of Vietnam In 1954, Vietnam was divided into two states: communist North Vietnam and non-communist South Vietnam. When Vietnamese communists began attacking South Vietnam, the U.S. sent troops to help. At one point, over 500,000 U.S. troops were fighting in support of South Vietnam.

7 Eisenhower 1954 Rising communist sentiment in Vietnam leads U.S. President Eisenhower to describe the situation as the domino theory. (The fall of one country to communism will lead to the fall of its neighbors) Result: In 1954, An International Peace Conference divides Indochina at the 17th parallel. North Vietnam Led by Ho Chi Minh s communist forces and supported by the USSR and China South Vietnam Led by an anti-communist government under the rule of Ngo Dinh Diem and supported by the U.S. and France.
