3 IOM Regional Response to the Syria Crisis January 2017 TURKEY 29 million reugees in Turkey as o 12 January ,017 ssisted Targeted 576,635 Protection Training In January, IOM provided basic protection training to 179 drivers o two transportation companies that are newly contracted or the 9 Locations 113 Sta 21 International 92 National school transportation project Two one-day training sessions were conducted in dana and Sanliura to ensure the drivers are aware o IOM s guidelines and regulations on the provision o school transportation services as well as the importance o child protection and prevention o sexual exploitation and abuse (PSE) The training also contained topics o driving saety precautions in line with the Turkish traic laws This training was particularly important to raise the drivers awareness o children s rights, prevent sexual exploitation and abuses, and provide a sae environment or Syrian reugee students during the commute Supporting the Well-being and Cohesion o Syrian Reugees and their Host Communities During the month o January, IOM and its partners convened 46 sessions o various conlict management and social cohesion activities through its two implementing partners in Hatay and Istanbul total o 4,137 people, including 3,113 Syrian reugees and 1,024 Turkish host community members, participated in a variety o creative events, including ootball matches, ilm screenings, social gatherings or women, museum visits, and structured dialogue on common values between Syrian and Turkish amilies The conlict management activities aimed to encourage positive interactions between Syrian reugees and Turkish host community members, and build upon the beneits o social cohesion (Photo: IOM Turkey 2017) Figures reported below are rom activities in 2017 O e e q i b 6,540 (3,540 ) urban reugees TRNSPORTTION SERVICES 2,099 (2,099 ) urban reugees SCHOOL TRNSPORTTION 8,544 (8,544 ) urban reugees FOOD SSISTNCE 6,000 (6,000 ) Syrian reugees CPCITY BUILDING 179 (179 ) beneiciaries 2,780 (2,780 ) beneiciaries PSYCHOSOCIL SUPPORT 8,081 (8,081 ) beneiciaries LEGL SSISTNCE 546 (546 ) beneiciaries CSE MNGEMENT 197 (197 ) cases SOCIL SUPPORT SERVICES 1,831 (1,831 ) beneiciaries LIVELIHOOD SSISTNCE 3,533 (3,533 ) beneiciaries c EDUCTION 2,365 (2,365 ) beneiciaries k WSH 930 (930 ) beneiciaries T VOUCHER PROGRMME 13,392 (13,392 ) beneiciaries Through Their Eyes The year 2017 started with a big surprise or Trade Specialist, bdulhamid, a 26-year-old Syrian rom leppo Two years ago, bdulhamid, had just begun his career in trade when he was orced to lee to Turkey, along with his elderly mother While happy to be sae, inding a job and means o living was the next hurdle Despite learning Turkish in a relatively short time, he was unable to work ormally given his Temporary Protection status and the complicated procedures or work permit applications To get by, he worked as a reelance Trade Specialist but work was uncertain and irregular In late 2016, one o bdulhamid s riends inormed him o a post on social media about IOM s job placement program and he immediately sent his CV Within a week, bdulhamid was contacted by IOM and sent or an interview with a Turkish company based in Gaziantep, specialized in exporting hygiene items globally ter his success in the interview, bdulhamid was selected or a position as Trade Specialist to expand the brand to rabic-speaking countries Then came the procedures; IOM s livelihoods experts worked with the company and (Photo: IOM Turkey 2017) bdulhamid to prepare the work-permit application and supporting documents and coordinated closely with the Turkish Ministry o Labour to assist in the processing o the application which inally came through in the irst week o the year I eel happy and secure now, he says The uture seems clearer and I can work on improving my career to be a manager in the uture bdulhamid now has a one-year ixed term contract with the company The job placement scheme by IOM, provides incentives or Turkish employers to hire skilled Syrians by supporting the work-permit process, covering the cost o the permit ees and covering 50 per cent o the salary and social security costs or one year The company is expected to cover the remaining 50 per cent In IOM s interview with the company, having now learned the process, they have already indicated a willingness to hire additional Syrian employees who bring dierent skills to the labour orce IOM has placed an additional three qualiied Syrians into work including one graphic designer and two engineers and has a target to place at least 50 by June 2017 wwwiomint/countries/syria 3

4 (Photo: IOM Lebanon 2017) IOM Regional Response to the Syria Crisis January 2017 LEBNON 101 million reugees in Lebanon as o 31 December ,050 ssisted Targeted 271,428 7 Locations 303 Sta Social Stability Community Support Projects in Northern Lebanon 12 International Since October 2016, IOM has been delivering three community support 291 National projects that were mainly ocused on inrastructure and rehabilitation works in poor neighbourhoods in Northern Lebanon namely Wadi Khaled and Machha in kkar, and Qobbe in Tripoli The implementation o the projects was done in collaboration with the municipalities and the local community which enabled them to work closely and oversee the projects that are or the beneit o the reugees and the host community These projects provided displaced Syrians and aected Lebanese youth with short-term employment, while the construction and repairs ameliorated the image o the neighbourhood and the living conditions o Syrian and Lebanese residents By engaging youth in these projects, IOM presented a constructive alternative to negative coping strategies that can accompany unemployment, and allowed local authorities to meet community needs Inauguration events took place on 20 January in Machha and 23 January in Wadi Khaled in which several Figures reported below are rom activities in 2017 K 1,968 (1,968 ) beneiciaries PSYCHOSOCIL SUPPORT 2,099 (2,099 ) beneiciaries TCN EVCUTED 1 (1 ) individuals i PROTECTION Transit ssistance 106 (106 ) beneiciaries 904 (904 ) beneiciaries Mental Health and Psychosocial Support During the reporting period, IOM s multidisciplinary psychosocial team organized sessions with women, men, youth, and children and implemented various psychosocial support activities (storytelling, recreational activities, and artistic mediation activities or women, children and youth; and support group sessions or men and women) The psychosocial activities were organized at Dari Recreational and Counselling Centre in Baalback, Bekaa, and through outreach mobile teams in Bekaa and South o Lebanon and beneitted 2,099 Syrians Inauguration ceremony in Machha, kkar (Photo: IOM Lebanon 2017) Through Their Eyes yda, 44 years old, is living in Senay with one o her (Photo: IOM Lebanon 2017) two sons, her sister, and her sister s three children Two years ago, she moved rom Beirut to Senay in the South with her son Deeb (22 years old), while her son Rabih (27 years old) stayed with his ather She is now living with her sister and her three children In the last two years, I stayed at home, I didn t go anywhere outside I elt like I was a burden to my sister since I placed a lot o my responsibilities on her, yda said IOM irst interviewed yda in September 2016 where she expressed her talent or doing make-up and hairdressing Soon ater the interview, yda enrolled in courses and seminars in the ields o hairdressing, cosmetics, nails, make-up and personal styling at a nearby institute IOM then provided yda with the necessary tools to start a business and she rented a small shop where she oers her hairdressing and cosmetic services I now eel like a productive person in the society, and most importantly I can contribute to the household expenses I eel that I am an independent woman wwwiomint/countries/syria 4
