Dr. Susanne Asche Karlsruhe The Integration Programme of the City of Karlsruhe - A Contribution to 1/23

It s just the variety of the population that Karlsruhe considers an opportunity. The city s foundation and the Charter of Rights written by Karlsruhe s founder were the bases for a cosmopolitan city. Throughout our history, we have always welcomed people from other nations - whether they come for a visit or to live and to work here. 2/23

Only by integrating people from other countries and often from other cultural backgrounds can we combat racism and racially motivated acts. 3/23

Karlsruhe s integration concept is part of a Germany-wide development. 4/23

There are always two sides to integration: Integration doesn t just come automatically; it can t just be decreed. (...) A common understanding of integration has to be developed. (Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel, 2007) 5/23

Karlsruhe s Guidelines for the Integration of Migrants and the Ten-Point-Plan of Action against Racism 6/23

The foundation of the city: The Charter of Rights of 1715 Today, Karlsruhe is Baden-Württemberg s third-largest city - wealthy, a good infrastructure, an elite university, numerous internationally renowned cultural institutions, excellent schools and establishments of higher learning. Its economic focus is on new information technologies. 7/23
