1 FACT FILE KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA
2 Introduction The basis for the modern Saudi Arabia was formed in 1932 when King Abdul Aziz bin Abdul Rahman Al Saud united the different regions of Arabian Peninsula into one nation. King Abdul Aziz died in 1953 and King Saud bin Abdul Aziz became the new Crown Prince. King Saud established the Council of Ministers and the Ministries of Health, Education and Commerce. In 1964 Crown Prince King Faisal became the King. He was assassinated and succeeded by his brother Khalid bin Abdul Aziz. In 2005 King Abdullah became the chief of the state. The King introduced number of economic reforms aimed at the diversification of the economy and strengthening the private sector. Geography: Saudi Arabia occupies a large part of the Arabian Peninsula with an area of about 865,000 square miles. The country consists of thirteen provinces which is primarily composed of desert area. Riyadh is the capital city which is located in the central eastern part of the country. It extends from Red Sea on the west to the Arabian Gulf in the East. It is largely bounded by land area which includes seven countries.to the west, is Yemen connected by the coastal border formed by Gulf of Aqaba and Red Sea which is almost 18,000km wide. To the north it borders with Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait and to the south is Sultanate of Oman. To the East lies United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and The Island of Bahrain. Strategically, Saudi Arabia lies at the crossroads of three continents: Europe, Asia, and Africa. Government: Chief of state/king and Prime Minister: Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz al- Saud. The Central Institution of Saudi Arabian government is monarchy. The constitution of the country is based on the principles of the Holy Quran which is governed by Sharia law. Council of Ministers: 1953 onwards the Council of Ministers is appointed by the King. The Council consists of the king (PrimeMinister), the first and the second deputy ministers,20 ministers,2 ministers of state and a small number of advisors and the heads of major autonomous organizations. The Kingdom is Saudi Arabia is divided into 13 provinces that are governed by the princes or the close relatives of the royal family. All the governors are appointed by the King.
3 Demography: Population in Saudi Arabia increased to Million in December of 2011 from Million in December of 2010, according to a report released by the World Bank. According to 2010 the population of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia amounted to 27,136,977, out of whom 8,429,401 were expatriates, a preliminary report by the Public Statistics and Information Department which recently conducted a countrywide census said today. In a statement, the authority said the figures, still under revision, reflect the number of population as of April 27, Saudi population: 27,136,977 Population 2010 Saudi nationals Expatriate 0% 31% 69% Saudi population: 18,707,576 males: 9,527,173 females :9,180,403

5 Economy: Fact file/saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia s economy is largely oil-based with strong government controls on most economic activities. Saudi Arabia is the world s largest exporter of petroleum and is an important member of the OPEC. The country s petroleum sectors account for 45% of the GDP and 90% of the export earnings. The Saudi economy is also dependent on roughly 6 million overseas workers, mostly in the oil and service sectors. Saudi Arabia has been a member of the WTO since December 2005 to attract foreign investment. The new economic cities King Abdullah Economic City, Prince Abdul Aziz Bin Mousaed Economic City, Knowledge Economic City and Jazan Economic City will promote economic diversification, create over a million new job opportunities, homes for 4-5 million residents and, most significantly contribute to Saudi economy. At regional level Saudi Arabia has developed closed ties with the other Arab and Gulf states through memberships in the Arab Bureau of Education for the Gulf States, Arab Monetary Fund, Arab Sports Federation, and Gulf Cooperation Council, Islamic Cooperation for the Development of Private Sector, League of the Arab States, Muslim World League, Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).KSA is also a member of IMF. Saudi Arabia gained full membership at World Trade Organization in December Saudi Arabia, being geographically located the cross roads of the world has a powerful economy and a stable government. Kingdom s foreign policy is not only restricted to promote its own national interest. It has worked not only for regional peace but also made efforts to bring stability and peace at international level. Pak-Saudi Relations Pakistan and Saudi Arab enjoy excellent relations. The people of Pakistan have close affiliation with the land and people of birth place of Islam. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have extensive trade relations. The trade rose to 18 billion dollars in Pakistan s exports to Saudi Arabia (June- Jul)
