1 INFORMATION SHEET For the UK visa applicants All applicants in Bangladesh wishing to come to the United Kingdom for a period longer than six months need to obtain a certificate confirming that they are free from infectious tuberculosis (TB) before submitting their visa application. The categories of applicant that are affected include long term students, Points Based System Tier 2 and Tier 5 workers (longer than 6 months), other employment and domestic workers, volunteer workers (plus all dependents of the aforementioned), and all settlement and marriage cases, including fiancé(e)s or proposed civil partners. Please note that those failing to submit an IOM TB certificate at the time of visa application will be refused and the visa fee will not be refunded. An IOM Medical Certificate will be provided for all applicants, regardless of age, who are free of infectious tuberculosis and who are applying for visa to come to the United Kingdom for a period longer than six months. 2 Printed address in the UK. Procedures All applicants will have to undergo interview with a physician and answer questions about their health. For applicants of 11 years of age and above, the medical TB detection procedure consists of: Registration at the IOM office from 8:30 13:00 hours and 14:00 15:30 hours by appointment. Photo will be taken electronically during the registration process. A Chest X ray after registration. Laboratory testing if TB is suspected. A certificate issued at the IOM office. For applicants below 11 years of age, the medical TB detection procedure consists of: Registration at the IOM office from 8:30 13:00 hours and 14:00 15:30 by appointment. Photo will be taken electronically during the registration process. Questionnaire regarding child s health and contacts with the TB patients, answered by a parent or guardian. If indicated: further evaluation as for the applicants of 11 years and above. A certificate issued at the IOM office. Important Notes: Where a child has symptoms or signs of active pulmonary TB, or a history of previous TB, or a history of recent contact with a case of active pulmonary TB, then the child is required to have EITHER a CXR OR 3 sputum samples OR gastric lavage (on 3 occasions) for mycobacterial examination. Children less than 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or a legal guardian, who can sign and take decision on their behalf. Pregnant applicants have the option of having a CXR with extra protection, including double wrap round shielding in the 2nd and 3rd trimesters. Those applicants unwilling to undertake CXR and applicants unable for medical reasons to have a CXR must provide sputum specimens in IOM laboratory for smear and culture. Pregnant women also can choose to wait until after delivery for CXR. Laboratory testing If chest X ray is abnormal, presenting changes suggestive of an active or inactive TB process or if there are other clinical reasons to suspect TB disease, the applicant will be referred for sputum testing. Sputum will be collected in the morning hours for three consecutive days. In addition to sputum smears sputum cultures will be done. The testing with sputum culture takes 6weeks+ after the date of 3 rd sample production. In case of contamination which is rare, may take additional 2 weeks. Results and certification The applicants can only obtain their results in person from the IOM office. In order to protect applicants confidentiality, the results are never communicated by phone. The certificate will be issued on the next working day if chest X ray findings do not warrant laboratory testing. Certificate Delivery Time is Sunday to Thursday from 3.30 PM to 4.30 PM. Applicant must bring his/her original passport, consent form and money receipt while collecting certificates. Parents/legal guardian can receive the certificate of the applicants less than 11 years.
