1 ACDI/VOCA ACDI/VOCA has been an implementing partner of WFP s Purchase for Progress (P4P) since the programme s inception. P4P allows WFP to pilot new avenues for supporting agriculture and economic development in developing countries. ACDI/VOCA has partnered with Purchase for Progress (P4P) in Ethiopia, Ghana, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, and Tanzania to build the capacity of smallholder farmers, providing them with sustainable and diverse skill sets. ACDI/VOCA is an economic development organisation that fosters broad-based economic growth, raises living standards, and creates vibrant communities. Based in Washington, D.C., ACDI/VOCA has worked in 146 countries since Its practice areas are catalyzing investment, climate-smart agriculture, empowerment & resilience, institutional strengthening, and market systems. Bill Polidoro, President and CEO Bill Polidoro joined ACDI/VOCA in October 2005, becoming President and CEO in January Mr. Polidoro came to ACDI/VOCA from Pact, Inc., where he served as the director for the Africa region after working as the country director for Kenya and Sudan, and as a senior programme manager. He earned his doctorate in development anthropology at the American University in Washington, D.C., and has a B.A. in sociology from North Adams State College in Massachusetts. He has also completed additional graduate work in anthropology and South Asian studies at the University of Chicago, in Illinois. His work with Pact, Datex, and Development Assistance Corporation included strengthening public administration, agricultural marketing, livelihoods, civil society development, and community responses to HIV/AIDS. s Through a consistent mission-driven and market-minded approach, ACDI/VOCA has become a leading implementer of international development projects. 2 ACTION CONTRE LA FAIM FRANCE This year, Action Contre la Faim (ACF) has partnered with WFP in 15 countries. 18 projects in different sectors (Food Assistance and General Distribution, Nutrition, Asset Creation, Capacity Development, HIV/TB disease). Action Contre la Faim (ACF) was founded by a group of prominent French figures in response to the emergency caused by Afghan refugees fleeing to Pakistan to escape fighting in 1979, with the aim of eradicating hunger in a more global, lasting and effective manner. While the fight against hunger had previously been integrated into more general humanitarian action (the fight against poverty, promoting better health, etc.), ACF s founder members created an organisation specializing in the problems associated with hunger. Véronique Andrieux, CEO Veronique Andrieux is an International Development specialist. She has a Masters degree in Business Administration from ESADE, and postgraduate diplomas in Development Studies from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS Paris) and in Policy Studies from the School of African and Oriental Studies at the University of London (SOAS). Previously, she served for four years as Senior Policy Advisor at the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and seven years as Oxfam Regional Director. She has field experience in Latin America, West and Central Africa, and Northern Africa. She has conducted planning and programmes revision processes, and has consulted for Oxfam GB and the Catalan Development Agency, among other organisations. s ACF s mission consists of saving lives via the prevention, detection and treatment of malnutrition, in particular during and following disasters and conflicts. The organisation focuses its activities on an integrated approach, taking various aspects into account: nutrition, health and healthcare practices, food security and livelihoods, water, sanitation and hygiene, and advocacy and awareness raising. In 2016 ACF was active in more than 45 countries assisting more than 13 million people. Ms. Véronique Andrieux, CEO

3 ACTIONAID INTERNATIONAL This year, ActionAid has partnered with WFP in Kenya, Malawi, Somalia and Zimbabwe 3 projects in different sectors including Food Assistance and General Food Distribution. ActionAid is an international NGO whose primary aim is to work against poverty and injustice worldwide. ActionAid was founded in 1972 by Cecil Jackon-Cole as a child sponsorship charity (originally called Action in Distress), the primary focus being on providing children with an education. Today its head office is located in South Africa with hubs in Asia, the Americas and Europe. Marco De Ponte, Secretary General Marco De Ponte has been Secretary General of ActionAid Italy since A graduate in International Relations from the University of Padua, he holds a Master s degree in Human Rights from the University of London. He was previously vicepresident of Amnesty International Italia for six years. s ActionAid s mission consists of promoting farmers rights, education, poverty, emergencies, conflict climate change and HIV/Aids and food security. ActionAid is working with over 15 million people in 45 countries for a world free from poverty and injustice. Mr. Marco De Ponte, Secretary General

4 ADVENTIST DEVELOPMENT and RELIEF AGENCY (ADRA) This year the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) partnered with WFP in 12 countries. Project activities included Asset creation, Food Assistance and General Food Distribution, Nutrition, School Feeding, HIV/TB disease, Capacity Development programmes. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is the global humanitarian organisation of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Through an international network, ADRA delivers relief and development assistance to individuals, regardless of their ethnicity, political affiliation, or religious association. Jonathan Duffy, President Jonathan Duffy was elected President of the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) in Prior to joining ADRA International in the US, he was CEO of ADRA Australia, where he emphasized strong relations with the Seventh-Day Adventist church and helped to secure a broad supporter base. Under his direction, more than 25 percent of Adventist churches in Australia became engaged in ADRA projects. Duffy has a strong public health background, having worked and held leadership positions in the sector for 28 years. His passion is seeing the real changes in people s lives through ADRA s humanitarian work. He is also an accomplished corporate presenter, educator and chairman. s By partnering with communities, organisations, and governments, ADRA is able to improve the quality of life of millions of people through nine impact areas: livelihoods and agriculture, children, water sanitation and hygiene, community health, disaster response, economic growth, hunger and nutrition, social justice and gender equity. In 2016 ADRA was active in 139 countries around the world assisting more than 18 million people. Mr. Jonathan Duffy, CEO

5 AGA KHAN FOUNDATION This year, the Aga Khan Foundation has partnered with WFP in Afghanistan and Mozambique. Project activities included Asset Creation and Nutrition programmes. The Aga Khan Foundation (AKF), alongside its sister AKDN agencies, has implemented innovative, community-driven solutions to development challenges for more than 45 years. It focusses on a small number of specific development problems by forming intellectual and financial partnerships with organisations sharing its objectives. Matt Reed, CEO, Aga Khan Foundation UK Matt Reed oversees strategic partnerships, business development, and project management with European and Asian governments, corporations and foundations, and multilateral institutions and is focused on expanding AKF s partnerships in the UK and Europe. Between 2013 and 2016, Matt led the Foundation s work in India as its CEO, focusing AKF on the needs of marginalised communities, establishing significant new relationships, and launching multistate programmes in education, financial inclusion, livelihoods, and water and sanitation. Previously, he worked at the Salzburg Seminar, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Keck Graduate Institute at the Claremont Colleges. s AKF focusses on five thematic areas: rural development, health, education, civil society and the environment. Its activities are intended to improve the quality of life of beneficiary communities by assisting in the struggle against hunger, disease, illiteracy, ignorance and social exclusion. 6 AGENCE D AIDE A LA COOPERATION TECHNIQUE ET AU DEVELOPMENT (ACTED) This year ACTED partnered with WFP in 9 countries. 11 projects in different sectors (General Food Distribution, Nutrition, Asset Creation, Capacity Development). A French humanitarian NGO set up in 1993, ACTED is a non-governmental, non-political and non-profit organization committed to supporting vulnerable populations across the world. ACTED s teams take action in 35 countries, responding to emergency situations, and supporting rehabilitation projects. It is the second largest French NGO, with its headquarters in Paris, France. Marie-Pierre Caley, CEO Marie Pierre Caley is a co-founder of ACTED. She worked on the development of ACTED's activities in Afghanistan, then Central Asia and, since 2004, in response to the humanitarian crises around the world. Today, she oversees all of the NGO's missions in nearly 35 countries. ACTED intervenes in eight fields: coordination of humanitarian emergencies, food security, health promotion, education and training, economic development, microfinance (see below), advocacy, institutional support, regional dialogue and cultural promotion. ACTED s teams are based in 35 countries, with over 450 projects supporting the needs of 8 million people APC participants: Ms. Camille Chemin, Grant Manager

7 ASSOCIAZIONE VOLONTARI PER IL SERVIZIO NAZIONALE (AVSI) This year AVSI partnered with WFP in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Haiti and South Sudan. Project activities included Food Assistance and General Distribution, Nutrition, HIV/TB disease programmes. AVSI Foundation, an NGO created in 1972, carries out cooperation projects for development, with a particular emphasis on education. Its work is focused on the defence and promotion of the dignity of the individual, the cornerstone of every project. AVSI works across the world with a network of 35 founding members and more than 700 partners. Giampaolo Silvestri, Secretary General A graduate in Economics from Bocconi University, Milan, Giampaolo joined AVSI in He started with a focus on Eastern European projects, becoming Projects Area Manager and later Executive Director. In 2015, the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation appointed him as a member of the National Council for Cooperation and Development, to represent civil society organizations and other non-profit entities. AVSI Foundation operates in several different areas of expertise: education and social development, urban development, health, employment and training, agriculture, food security, water, energy, protection of the environment, humanitarian emergencies, migration, human rights. AVSI Foundation s Knowledge Centre oversees the documentation collected and produced by various projects, safeguards the knowledge base and promotes its continuing expansion via publications, research, and seminars. The AVSI Foundation reaches more than 2.6 million direct beneficiaries per year APC participants: Ms. Nada Perovic, Project Manager

8 BEYAZ-ELLER WFP has been working with the President of Beyaz-Eller on finding common ground for addressing the ongoing Syrian crisis and continuing to aid those affected. Mr. Ashmawey was a part of the WFP Panel on Inter-religious Engagement for Zero Hunger here at HQ in June, Beyaz Eller was established in 2013 during the Syrian crisis. The organization s purpose is to mitigate the effects of the crisis and to provide humanitarian support to those affected. Beyaz Eller is a humanitarian relief charity and provides services for all vulnerable and needy groups without distinction of religion, race or creed. s Beyaz Eller projects include: food security, livelihoods, water, education, health and NFIs. Mohamed Ashmawey, President Mohamed Ashmawey is the President of Bayez Eller. He was previously CEO of Islamic Relief from 2012 to 2016, leading the organization s family in over 40 countries. His many years of corporate management expertise in process re-engineering and organisational restructuring helped to change the way that Islamic Relief works. Mr Ashmawey was formerly CEO of Islamic Relief USA and has held senior roles in the corporate sector including as a Vice-Chairman for Electronic Data Systems where his clients included ABN Amro and General Motors. 9 BANGLADESH REHABILITATION ASSISTANCE COMMITTEE (BRAC) This year, BRAC partnered with WFP in Bangladesh and Liberia. Project activities included Food Assistance and School Feeding programmes. BRAC was founded in 1972 by Sir Fazle Hasan Abed as a small-scale relief and rehabilitation project to help returning war refugees after the Bangladesh Liberation War of Homes were rebuilt as part of the relief effort and several hundred boats were provided for fishermen. Medical centres were opened and other essential services were ensured. By 1974, BRAC had started providing micro-credit and analysing the usefulness of credit inputs in the lives of the poor. Lewis Temple, CEO (UK) Lewis Temple has been working in international development across the world for over twenty years, joining BRAC UK in late He leads the team based in London on developing partnerships and generating resources to help BRAC achieve its mission worldwide. BRAC social enterprises and microfinance are outstanding examples of businesses that benefit many thousands of people by providing employment and income opportunities, and also generate profits to enable BRAC to deliver its development services to the poorest. BRAC focuses on community development through village development programmes that include agriculture, fisheries, cooperatives, rural crafts, adult literacy, health and family planning, vocational training for women and the construction of community centres. 10 BURUNDI RED CROSS The Burundi Red Cross is WFP s largest operational partner in Burundi, and is one of four pilot countries in WFP s pilot capacity strengthening initiative with the IFRC. The Burundi Red Cross was founded in 1963, with its headquarters in Bujumbura, and is a society of the International Federation of the Red Cross. It is recognized as a voluntary, autonomous relief society, whose general purpose is to prevent and alleviate suffering without any discrimination, in particular of nationality, race, sex, ethnicity, religion, or political opinion. Pamphile Kantabaze, President Mr. Kantabaze, a retired health specialist, has worked since 2011 with the National Red Cross Society providing technical and governance support. Previously, he has worked as a Senior Operations Officer for the World Bank Group, Africa region, for 17 years and as a senior civil servant with the Ministry of Health and HIV/AIDS in Burundi. He holds a Diploma of Public Health from Ecole Nationale de la Sante Publique in Rennes, France and a Masters of Arts, Health Sciences Pedagogy from the University Laval Quebec in Canada. The BRC is the leading humanitarian agency in Burundi, with a countrywide presence at national headquarters, provincial (18 Branches), municipal (129 communes), and colline level (2,908 Red Cross units in collines or hills), as well as a network of 450,000 volunteers. The BRC has a pool of 40 specialized National Disaster Response Teams (NDRT) volunteers trained in first aid, emergency needs assessments, SPHERE standards, WASH and camp management. In 2016 BRC was active across Burundi, engaged in food, cholera control, HIV/Aids treatment, water treatment, and delivering hygiene kits to populations affected by multiple emergencies. 11 CASH LEARNING PARTNERSHIP (CaLP) WFP s Tahir Nour, Chief Market Access s, is currently on CaLP s technical advisory group that is dedicated to helping CaLP provide guidance and technical leadership to the wider Community of Practice. The Cash Learning Partnership (CaLP) is a global partnership of humanitarian actors engaged in policy, practice and research within cash transfer programming (CTP). Formed of a community of practice including over 150 organisations and more than 5,000 individuals in the humanitarian sector, CaLP is based on learning, knowledge sharing, networking and coordination around the appropriate and timely use of CTP in humanitarian response. Alex Jacobs, Director Mr. Jacobs moved to CaLP from Plan International, where he led the re-design of their approach to programme management as Director of Quality. Alex has worked in the humanitarian sector for 20 years, after qualifying as an accountant, starting his career with Oxfam in Rwanda and the DRC. Subsequently, he founded Mango, an award winning NGO, which he led for 10 years. During this time, he was closely involved with reforms to improve how agencies engage with local people. He has held visiting fellowships at Oxford University and Duke University, as well as positions on a range of boards. He also led work for the World Humanitarian Summit on reforms to strengthen community engagement in humanitarian response. s CaLP s aim is to transform humanitarian practice so that people and communities affected by disaster and crisis are empowered to make decisions for their own lives. CaLP initially worked in four disaster prone countries (Niger, Zimbabwe, Philippines and Kenya) and provided emergency technical support and coordination to humanitarian actors implementing CTP in response to the Haiti earthquake, the Pakistan floods, Ivory Coast post-election violence and the Horn and East Africa drought crisis. CaLP stresses its role as a catalyst for change and has a wider focus not only on emergency response but also on preparedness and early recovery. Through its regional hubs and an extensive communication network, CaLP provides an impartial prioritisation of the most pertinent and relevant CTP issues for all stakeholders across different contexts. In addition, the global presence of CaLP enables technical leadership and a two-way transfer of knowledge and conversation, ensuring that global, regional and country level conversations are mutually reinforcing APC participants: Mr. Alex Jacob, Director

12 CARE INTERNATIONAL This year CARE partnered with WFP in 11 countries. 13 projects in different sectors (Food Assistance and General Distribution, Nutrition, School Feeding, HIV/TB disease). Wolfgang Jamann, CEO, CARE International Dr. Wolfgang Jamann joined CARE in March 2015 as the Secretary General and CEO of CARE International. Dr. Jamann is responsible for coordinating the work of the CARE International confederation, which is composed of 14 national members engaged in emergency relief and long-term development work across the globe. Dr. Jamann has more than 20 years of experience in development assistance and humanitarian response, and has lived and worked in Africa and Southeast Asia. Prior to his current position at CARE, he was the CEO and Chairman of Welthungerhilfe (German Agro Action; ), one of the largest international aid organizations in Germany fighting hunger and poverty, with a particular focus on food security and sustainable development. CARE was founded in 1945, when 22 American organisations came together to rush lifesaving CARE Packages to survivors of World War II. CARE is a global leader within a worldwide movement dedicated to ending poverty. CARE works around the globe to save lives, defeat poverty and achieve social justice. s CARE is working in 94 countries, supporting 962 poverty-fighting humanitarian aid projects, and reaching over 80 million people. projects and CARE works to improve basic health and education, enhance rural livelihoods and food security, increase access to clean water and sanitation, expand economic opportunity, help vulnerable people adapt to climate change, and provide lifesaving assistance during emergencies. 13 CARITAS INTERNATIONALIS This year Caritas partnered with WFP in 18 countries. Project activities included General Food and Cash Distribution, School Feeding, Capacity Development, Nutrition, HIV/TB disease, Asset Creation programmes. Michel Roy, Secretary General Michel Roy is the Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis. Previously, he was the director of the international lobbying and advocacy department at Secours Catholique (Caritas France). He has a wide background of expertise in humanitarian and development work. He speaks French, Spanish, Italian and English. Caritas Internationalis is a confederation of over 160 members who are working at the grassroots in almost every country of the world. Caritas is at the heart of the Catholic church s mission. Its member organisations link together in a confederation to serve the world s poor, vulnerable, dispossessed and marginalized. Caritas is inspired by scripture, Catholic social teaching, and by the experiences and hopes of people who are disadvantaged and living in poverty. They work with people of all faiths and those who have none. Caritas strives for a world where the voices of the poor are heard and acted upon, where each person is free to flourish and live in peace and dignity, and where our natural environment given by God is managed responsibly and sustainably in the interests of the entire human family. s The work of Caritas is about ensuring the poorest and most marginalized are the driving force in their emergency response, sustainable development and peace building. To achieve this, they focus on five key areas: conflicts and disasters, food, health, migration and development. From the founding of the first Caritas in Germany in 1897, to the setting up of Caritas Internationalis in 1951, until today, Caritas has a rich history of listening respectfully to the suffering of the poor and giving them the tools to transform their own lives. The deep moral and spiritual principles of dignity, justice, solidarity and stewardship still guide Caritas today APC participants: Mr. Michel Roy, Secretary General

14 CARITAS IN VERITATE INTERNATIONAL Caritas in Veritate International are attending the APC for the first time. Henry Cappello, President and Executive Director Henry Cappello has a single-minded vision for serving the poor. In order to accomplish that mission, he serves as president and executive director of Caritas in Veritate International (CiVI). Cappello oversees a confederation of 27 different organizations that proclaim the Gospel and provide charitable work for those in need. Born and educated in Malta, Cappello previously worked as personnel director for the Oil Service Company of Iran and Mediterranean Oil Service Company in Malta. Caritas in Veritate International is a confederation of Catholic institutions, dedicated to recruit, mobilize and engage volunteers, with a particular focus on young people: to bring charity in truth and human progress to people in great need to transform lives, by alleviating suffering, restoring dignity and inspiring hope, through the formation of volunteers in mind, heart, and spirit, as inspired by God s unconditional love. CiVI is working in Africa, Asia, Middle East and the Americas, providing support during emergencies. The main mission of CiVI is caring for and responding to the emergency needs of all, particularly, of abused women and children. Mr. Henry Cappello, President and Executive Director

15 CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) This year, Catholic Relief Services partnered with WFP in 5 countries. Project activities include School feeding, Food Assistance and General Distribution, Nutrition, Asset Creation, Capacity Development programmes. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) is the international humanitarian agency of the Catholic community in the United States, founded in 1943 by the United States Council of Catholic Bishops. A member of Caritas Internationalis, the worldwide network of Catholic humanitarian agencies, CRS provides relief in emergency situations and helps people in the developing world break the cycle of poverty through community-based, sustainable development initiatives as well as peacebuilding. Assistance is based solely on need, not race, creed or nationality. Catholic Relief Services is headquartered in Baltimore, Maryland while operating numerous field offices on five continents. Sean Callahan, President and CEO Mr.Callahan is the president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services. A 28-year veteran of CRS, Sean, has held a wide variety of leadership roles overseas and at agency headquarters. Previously, Sean served as the chief operating officer for CRS, responsible for Overseas Operations, U.S. Operations and Human Resources. Sean holds a master s degree in law and diplomacy from Tufts University, where he also received a bachelor s degree, magna cum laude, in Spanish. CRS programming includes promoting human development by responding to major emergencies, fighting disease and poverty and nurturing peaceful and just societies, emergency relief in the wake of disasters, and civil conflict. Long-term development programming in the areas of agriculture, water, community health, education, health, HIV/AIDS, micro finance and peace building. In 2016, the agency provided assistance to 130 million people in more than 90 countries and territories in Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East and Eastern Europe. 16 COMUNITÀ DI SANT'EGIDIO The Comunità di Sant'Egidio and WFP share a mission to reach the poorest and most marginalized people, and to build peace. The Comunità di Sant'Egidio is a Christian community that is officially recognized by the Catholic Church as a "Church public lay association". Since it was founded in 1968, the community has gathered each night to pray and read from the Bible, reflecting on the Gospel, eventually spreading throughout the world with a mission of helping those in need. Their activities include setting up refuges for the old, and hospices for AIDS patients. The lay Catholic Community of Sant'Egidio is among global leaders on HIV/AIDS, running programmes across Africa, pushing scientific research on mother-child transmission, and advocating passionately that everyone deserves the best care. Marco Impagliazzo, President and CEO President of the Comunità di Sant'Egidio since 2003, Marco Impagliazzo is also a Consultor for the Pontifical Council for Culture and for the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral Care of Migrants and Itinerant People. Since 1987, he has been an organizer of the Prayer for Peace meetings in the Comunità di Sant'Egidio, and in he took part in the mission of peace in Algeria. s The Comunità di Sant'Egidio has 50,000 members in more than 70 countries. Its main activities are prayer, centered on a reading of the Bible; spreading the Gospel to help people who are looking for a sense to their life; service to the poor, which is free and unpaid; commitment to ecumenism (the Community of Sant'Egidio is ecumenical, though rooted in the Catholic Church); dialogue with members of other religions and non-believers. The Comunità di Sant'Egidio invited WFP to the Inter-Religious Prayer for Peace event in Assisi in September 2016, providing an opportunity to expand our collaboration with faith leaders, and further profile to the campaign for Zero Hunger. 17 CONCERN WORLDWIDE This year, Concern Worldwide partnered with WFP in Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Sudan. Project activities include Food Assistance and General Distribution, HIV/TB disease, Nutrition, School Feeding programmes. Concern Worldwide is a non-governmental, international, humanitarian organisation dedicated to the reduction of suffering and works towards the elimination of extreme poverty in the world s poorest countries. Concern works in partnership with the very poorest people in these countries, directly enabling them to improve their lives, as well as using their knowledge and experience to influence decisions made at a local, national and international level that can significantly reduce extreme poverty. Dominic MacSorley, CEO Dominic MacSorley began working for Concern Worldwide in 1982, becoming CEO in 2013, and is a 30-year veteran of international aid and development work. Prior to his appointment as CEO, he served as Operations Director for Concern Worldwide U.S. in New York for 10 years, where he represented the organization at key United Nations and United States government meetings on foreign aid. MacSorley has also spearheaded emergency operations in a number of international crises, including Kosovo (Serbia), Afghanistan, Iraq, Darfur (Sudan), the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, and most recently, Haiti. 18 DANISH REFUGEE COUNCIL (DRC) This year, the Danish Refugee Council partnered with WFP in 7 countries. Project activities included Food Assistance and General Distribution, Nutrition programmes. The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) was founded in It serves as an umbrella group for 33 member organizations. Formed after the Second World War and in response to the European refugee crises caused by the Soviet invasion of Hungary in 1956, DRC has since been active in large scale humanitarian projects around the world. DRC has humanitarian programmes in conflict zones such as Somalia in the Horn of Africa, Afghanistan in Central Asia, Iraq in the Middle East and Chechnya in the Caucasus. The Danish Refugee Council is also one of the central humanitarian actors in Syria and the neighbouring countries. Mr. Christian Friis Bach, Secretary General Mr. Bach is the new Secretary General of the Danish Refugee Council, Denmark s largest international humanitarian organization. He has most recently been an Under-Secretary-General of the UN and the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. From 2011 to 2013 he served as the Minister for Development Cooperation in Denmark and as an MP in the Danish Parliament from 2011 to He is a former chairman of MS ActionAid Denmark, International Director of Danish Church Aid and a lecturer of International Economy at Copenhagen University s Faculty of Life Sciences. The Danish Refugee Council is implementing activities in nine sectors, namely: Housing and small-scale infrastructure, income generation through grant and micro-finance, food security & agricultural rehabilitation and development, demining, Displacement-related law and information, social rehabilitation, NGO networking and capacity development, humanitarian mine action, information management and coordination, and emergency logistics and transport management. 19 DOMINICAN REPUBLIC RED CROSS Dominican Republic is a country of over 10 million people which experiences recurring disasters and a constant threat of hurricanes and floods. WFP is working with DRC in emergency assistance projects, and as one of the pilot countries in the capacity strengthening project with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). The Dominican Republic Red Cross Society was established in It is recognized as a voluntary, autonomous relief society. Its general purpose is to prevent and alleviate suffering without any discrimination, in particular of nationality, race, sex, ethnicity, religion, political opinion. Arq. Gustavo Lara, Director General Mr. Lara has been Director General of the Dominican Red Cross since He is an architect by profession and a trained psychologist. He has extensive experience in community work and is dedicated to empowering and strengthening the resilience of communities. The DRRC works closely with communities in need of assistance through their branches and community networks, which play a fundamental role in community-based emergency assistance, in coordination with the National Risk Management System. The National Society works with the Regional Office in the Americas of the IFRC to meet needs and provide support to the most vulnerable communities. The DRRC is engaged in emergency preparation activities, in addition to mounting emergency responses to the hurricanes and other natural disasters which regularly hit the island. Arq. Food for the Hungry (also known as FH) is an international relief and development organization. Food for the Hungry was founded in 1971 by Dr. Larry Ward. Early projects included helping refugees in war-torn Bangladesh, victims of the 1972 Nicaragua earthquake, rescuing Vietnamese boat people from the South China Sea, and helping hungry and needy people in Haiti and West Africa. The child sponsorship program was started in Hunger Corps, the people-sending division of Food for the Hungry, began in Mr. Gary Edmonds, CEO & MD Prior to assuming the position of CEO, Gary had pastored Crossroads Church in Geneva, Switzerland, and had been President and European Director of Christian Associates International, before becoming the Senior Associate Pastor of Mariners Church, a multicampus church based in Irvine, California. He has held director and executive roles at Interdev, Churches Together, the World Evangelical Alliance and Breakthrough Partners. He has served on the FH Board of Directors for the past eight years before becoming CEO in FH provides life-changing resources such as clean water, medical aid, food, equal educational opportunities to girls and boys, vocational training and empowerment. FH serve and work sideby-side with local leaders, responding to their needs with transformative solutions, which are both sustainable and implemented at the hands of the communities themselves. The diverse expertise of this German federal enterprise is utilized by the German government, European Union institutions, the United Nations and governments of other countries. GIZ offers customised solutions to complex challenges. GIZ is an experienced service provider and assists the German government in achieving its objectives in the field of international cooperation. Dr. Christoph Beier, CEO & MD Dr Christoph Beier was born near Munich in He studied geography, politics, ethnology and agriculture at the Technical University of Munich. Dr Beier began his professional career in 1989 in Saarland, Germany, where he worked for a business promotion agency and then for the Ministry of Economics. Following this and until 1996, he worked as research and teaching assistant to the chair for economics and social geography at Ruhr-University Bochum. In 2000, Dr Beier returned to GTZ as Director General of the Planning and Development Department. In 2010, Christoph Beier was appointed to the GTZ Management Board and in 2011 he became Vice-Chair of the GIZ Management Board. GIZ staff work in diverse projects and programmes throughout the world, with a goal to develop sustainable and effective solutions. GIZ deliver services in 130 countries in areas such as climate change mitigation and adaptation, sustainable urban mobility, vocational training adapted to labour market needs, fund management, development partnerships with the private sector, stakeholder dialogues, management services, rural development sustainable infrastructure, security, reconstruction and peace, social development, governance and democracy, economic development and employment. 22 GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR IMPROVED NUTRITION (GAIN) In March 2012, WFP and GAIN signed a 5-year Memorandum of Understanding in which the comparative advantage of each agency was clearly articulated. The partnership aims to increase the availability of nutritious foods to vulnerable populations through the integration of public and market-based solutions. Main areas of collaboration with GAIN include: 1) large scale food fortification to improve the production capacity and quality of fortified foods; 2) development and implementation of behavior change communication initiatives, and 3) food quality assurance/control. The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is an alliance driven by the vision of a world without malnutrition. Created in 2002 at a Special Session of the UN General Assembly on Children, GAIN supports public-private partnerships to increase access to the missing nutrients in diets. Dr. Lawrence Haddad, Executive Director Dr. Haddad joined GAIN on 1 October Previously, he was Senior Research Fellow at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI). He is also the former Director of the Institute of Development Studies (IDS). He developed his expertise in global development providing thought leadership on issues and challenges at the intersection of poverty, food insecurity and malnutrition. Prior to this, Dr Haddad was a Division Director at IFPRI and a Lecturer in Development Economics at the University of Warwick in the UK. GAIN has five global programmes to improve the health and lives of the beneficiaries. These are: food fortification, maternal infant and youth child nutrition, agriculture and nutrition, business partnerships and alliances and monitoring, learning and research. GAIN programmes are mainly focused on Africa and Asia. In 2016, GAIN reached an estimated 900 million people including 330 million women, adolescent girls and children 6 59 months: 51% of these were in Africa, 44% in Asia and 5% in the rest of the world. 23 GOOD NEIGHBORS INTERNATIONAL This year Good Neighbors International partnered with WFP in Bangladesh, Nepal and Rwanda. Project activities included Food Assistance programmes. Good Neighbors is an international, non-profit humanitarian organisation committed to child education, community development, and emergency relief projects in 35 countries around the world. Good Neighbors relies on active participation from community members in each country they work in for the majority of projects, building strong partnerships with volunteers, community leaders, local governments and other organisations. Sungrack Park, Secretary General Mr. Park is the Secretary General of the Good Neighbors Global Partnership Center, the global partnership hub of Good Neighbors International. He has served as country director for Kenya, Rwanda, Guatemala and Chile before working as the Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. He has lead humanitarian operations in different parts of the world including Haiti, DPRK and Pakistan. s Good Neighbors projects focus on the pressing needs of people living in developing nations. They strive to provide clean water to villages, safe cooking stoves to families, and nutrition and education to children. All of their operations are tailored to be as effective as possible by collaborating with others to accomplish goals, employing local staff, and creating only those projects they believe will be most beneficial for the countries they work in. Heifer international started with a shipment of 17 heifers to Puerto Rico in Since 1944, Heifer International has distributed livestock such as goats, bees, and water buffalo, along with training and other resources. Heifer International's mission is to work with communities to end world hunger and poverty and to care for the Earth. Mr. Pierre Ferrari, President & CEO Pierre Ferrari joined Heifer International in 2010 as President and CEO with more than 40 years of business experience. Ferrari has a keen interest in sustainable and ethical development. Previously, he worked at CARE, where he was special assistant to the President, leading the first comprehensive strategic plan based upon performance measures, participating in a feasibility mission for a hospital in Zaire, and reviewing a women s co-op banking project and micro loan programs in Niger. Heifer empowers families to turn hunger and poverty into hope and prosperity. Heifer links communities and helps bring sustainable agriculture and commerce to areas with a long history of poverty. Heifer s animals provide partners with both food and reliable income, as agricultural products such as milk, eggs and honey can be traded or sold at market. When many families gain this new sustainable income, it brings new opportunities for building schools, creating agricultural cooperatives, forming community savings and funding small businesses. Ever since its inception in 1981, Help Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe has been committed to providing people in need with prompt, sustainable and long-term aid and support. Help envision a world without misery, poverty and social inequality. Their goal is to enable people to take charge of their own life and live independently in dignity, peace and security. In line with its principle of assisting people towards self-reliance, Help works together with people in need, irrespective of their gender, age, political views or religious beliefs, by providing immediate aid in the aftermath of catastrophes and by making sustainable contributions to reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts in all areas of life. Ms. Karin Settele, Managing Director Karin Settele, became managing director of HELP in She graduated from Ruhr University Bochum in After several assignments in Africa, she coordinated the global crisis management and the emergency relief efforts of Help, including in South Eastern Europe and Asia. Help promotes improving life for the affected populations by strengthening their livelihoods, and provides assistance during emergency, reconstruction and for development. Sectors of assistance include: water, food security, health, education, income generation and climate resilience projects. In 2015, Help was involved in 110 projects around the globe. 26 THE HUMANITARIAN FORUM WFP and the Humanitarian Forum are working towards important cross-cutting humanitarian issues such as supporting the capacity strengthening of NGOs, advocating for a legal framework for greater transparency and accountability, and promoting humanitarian principles and standards. The Humanitarian Forum is a global network of key organisations from Muslim donor and recipient countries and their counterparts in Western regions. They aim to put beneficiaries first by building trust between different communities, organisations and individuals to maximize the effectiveness of humanitarian action. Through training, good governance, cooperation and maintaining humanitarian standards, they hope to create stronger, more efficient networks that can make the most of resources, improve learning and foster innovation. s The Humanitarian Forum s work centers on empowering civil society groups at all levels to reach their full potential. They create dialogue and understanding between Muslim organisations and their Western counterparts. At all levels, their work addresses five key areas of humanitarian work: capacity building and training; accountability; building bridges; coordination and cooperation; humanitarian standards Rawaad Mahyub, Executive Director Mr. Rawaad Mahyub is currently the Executive Director of the Humanitarian Forum. He worked previously as the Business Development Director at Right Start Foundation International for nearly 4 years and as a Project Manager for the same foundation for over 7 years. He graduated from the University of York with a degree in Chemistry with Management in Industry and then received an MBA from the University of Birmingham in The Humanitarian Forum runs workshops and creates partnerships with small organisations to increase capacity, accountability and expertise. At national level, their national forums give local organisations a strong collective voice. This is particularly crucial where state capacity to respond to disasters is limited, or different humanitarian communities lack coordination. 27 INTERACTION WFP is engaged with Interaction through its broad membership, and more recently has consulted Interaction to provide feedback on changes to the Field-Level Agreement used to contract partners under the Integrated Roadmap. InterAction is an alliance organization in Washington, D.C. of non-governmental organizations. It has more than 180 member organizations working in every developing country. Members are faith-based and secular, large and small, with a focus on the world s most poor and vulnerable populations. InterAction enables its members and partners to mobilize, enhance their impact, align common interests, build community, and promote learning and innovation. Mr. Sam Worthington, President and CEO Sam leads the U.S. NGO sector s engagement at the highest levels with the UN, governments, and civil society groups. Previously, Sam served as chief executive officer of Plan International USA ( ). His numerous leadership roles include serving on the White House Task Force on Global Development and Poverty, working as a founding board member of the ONE Campaign, and chairing the global NGO Impact Initiative on behalf of UN Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery Pres. Bill Clinton. Sam holds a master s degree from the Middlebury Institute of International Studies and a bachelor s degree from the University of Vermont. InterAction s range of programmes fall under humanitarian action, advocacy, international development and NGO accountability. 28 INTERNATIONAL COMMITTEE OF THE RED CROSS (ICRC) This year, ICRC partnered with WFP in Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Jordan and Niger. Project activities included General Food Distribution programmes. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of armed conflict and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC also endeavors to prevent suffering by promoting and strengthening humanitarian law and universal humanitarian principles. Established in 1863, the ICRC is at the origin of the Geneva Conventions and the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It directs and coordinates the international activities conducted by the Movement in armed conflicts and other situations of violence. Mr. Yves Daccord, Director General Yves Daccord, born in 1964, and holds a B.A. in political science. A former journalist, he joined the ICRC in 1992 and worked in Israel and the Occupied territories, Sudan, Yemen, the northern Caucasus and Georgia. He returned to ICRC headquarters in 1997 to take up the post of deputy head of the division for the Promotion of International Humanitarian Law. In 1998 he was appointed head of the Communication Division and then director of Communication in 2002, a post he held until his appointment as director-general in s The ICRC responds quickly and efficiently to help people affected by armed conflict. They also respond to disasters in conflict zones, because the effects of a disaster are compounded if a country is already at war. ICRC activities include: addressing sexual violence, building respect for law, cooperating with national societies, economic security, enabling people with disabilities, forensic science and humanitarian action, health, health care in danger, helping detainees, humanitarian diplomacy, migrants, mine action, protecting civilians, restoring family links, water and habitat, working with the corporate sector. 29 INTERNATIONAL COUNCIL OF VOLUNTA AGENCIES (ICVA) ICVA is a key partner for WFP as a convener of NGO partners, and has facilitated several consultations in recent years at their Geneva HQ at which partnership issues have been discussed. Ms. Melissa Pitotti, Head of Policy Melissa Pitotti is the Head of Policy for the ICVA Secretariat. Melissa works on humanitarian financing, forced displacement, and promoting better NGO partnerships with UNHCR, IOM, OCHA and others. Prior to ICVA, she worked in various capacities for the U.S. Department of State s Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration, as well as the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, and Riggs Bank International Banking Group. Her favourite thing to do is bring diverse stakeholders together to solve current problems in the humanitarian sector. The International Council of Voluntary Agencies (ICVA) is a global network of NGOs whose mission is to make humanitarian action more principled and effective by working collectively and independently to influence policy and practice. ICVA is a platform for increased collaboration and coordination between NGOs and other humanitarian actors, which is crucial to improving the lives of communities affected by humanitarian crises. The vision of ICVA is a world in which crises-affected populations are effectively protected, assisted, and enabled to rebuild their lives and livelihoods with dignity. Impact Established in 1962 by a small coalition of refugee and migration focused NGOs, ICVA has grown into a diverse network of NGOs operating at global, regional, national and local levels. ICVA advocates for principled humanitarian action, enhances recognition by governments and international organisations of the vital role of NGOs, and encourages high quality partnerships among humanitarian stakeholders. ICVA maintains its historical focus on forced displacement while at the same time addressing fundamental and emerging elements of concern to NGOs related to all crisis-affected populations. 30 INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION OF RED CROSS AND RED CRESCENT SOCIETIES (IFRC) WFP and IFRC are partners on multiple levels and in multiple contexts, at the global, regional and national levels. Areas of collaboration include emergency preparedness and response, capacity strengthening and enhancing resilience. Elhadj As Sy, Secretary General Mr. Sy has extensive experience in leadership roles in the humanitarian sector, having previously served at a senior level with UNICEF, UNAIDS, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and other agencies for more than 25 years. Before joining the IFRC, Mr. Sy was UNICEF s Director of Partnerships and Resource Development in New York. He has also served as UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa and Global Emergency Coordinator for the Horn of Africa. From 1988 to 1997, he served as Director of Health and Development s with Environment and Development Action in the Third World in Dakar, Senegal. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is the world's largest humanitarian organization, providing assistance without discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. Founded in 1919, the IFRC comprises 190 member Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies, a secretariat in Geneva and more than 60 delegations strategically located to support activities around the world. Kostas Moschochoritis, CEO Kostas Moschochoritis took over as Secretary General of INTERSOS in 2016, having already held the position of Director General of the organization since Born in Patras, Greece, in 1963, with a degree in Electrical Engineering, Kostas has extensive experience in the humanitarian field, working in Armenia, Liberia, Indonesia, Ethiopia, Albania and Colombia. INTERSOS is a non-profit humanitarian aid organization that works to assist victims of natural disaster and armed conflict. INTERSOS has operated as an independent organization since its foundation in 1992, its humanitarian actions are based on values of solidarity, justice, human dignity, respect for diversity, and equal rights and opportunities for all people, especially the most vulnerable. Through its own humanitarian operators, INTERSOS intervenes to answer the needs of people in serious crises situations, mainly in the world's poorest regions, who are suffering, deprived of rights, dignity and essentials goods. The INTERSOS mission consists of providing emergency relief, distribution of food, water, health, protection, humanitarian mine clearance and physical rehabilitation of land mine victims. Organization and management of refugee camps. Supporting the return of refugees and displaced persons. Assisting in the reconstruction of housing and community services, the restarting of economic activities and the democratic process. Fostering the growth of local potential and training courses. Promoting the resumption of dialogue, peace and reconciliation. 32 ISLAMIC RELIEF WORLDWIDE This year Islamic Relief partnered with WFP in 9 countries. Islamic Relief is an independent humanitarian and development organisation with a presence in more than 40 countries around the globe. They have been fighting poverty and injustice since Every year, their work helps millions of the world s poorest and most vulnerable people regardless of race, political affiliation, gender or belief. Naser Haghamed, CEO Mr Haghamed was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) in April Since joining IRW 23 years ago, he has worked in numerous leadership roles, including as Director of International s and as the Operations Director of the Islamic Relief Academy. Naser has over 25 years of expertise in both the private and non-profit sectors. As a successful leader, mentor and negotiator, Naser has travelled across 35 countries, is fluent in three languages, and has rich experience in dealing with people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds. s Islamic Relief works with communities to strengthen their resilience to disasters, and provides vital emergency aid when disasters occur. They help poor people to access basic services, including education, water and sanitation, as well as healthcare. IR provides lasting routes out of poverty through sustainable livelihoods schemes, and an integrated approach to development. 33 JAM INTERNATIONAL This year JAM partnered with WFP in Mozambique and South Sudan. Project activities included Food Assistance, General Distribution and School Feeding programmes. Joint Aid Management (JAM) is a South African-registered non-profit humanitarian organisation that has been expanding its expertise in relief and sustainable development in Africa since s JAM s programmes, which are based on a Complete Community Development Approach (CCDA), include Nutritional School Feeding, Orphan and Vulnerable Childcare, Water and Sanitation, and Food Development that includes agricultural development and the production of food. Peter Pretorious, Founder and CEO Peter founded Joint Aid Management (JAM) and as CEO oversees humanitarian relief operations in Angola, Rwanda, Sudan, South Africa and Mozambique. Peter was a successful businessman in both construction and farming, with a vision to retire by the age of 40 and to do his own thing in wildlife research. Peter s involvement in Christian outreach steered him to becoming involved in humanitarian aid work, which led him to the fateful experience in 1984 when he was left stranded at a relief and food distribution center for 10 days with no food and very little water. At this turning point, Peter and his wife, Ann, made the decision to dedicate their lives to alleviate the suffering of the poor, and established Joint Aid Management. JAM believes that without education, there can be no development. 34 LUTHERAN WORLD FEDERATION This year, the Lutheran World Federation partnered with WFP in Chad, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti and Kenya. Project activities included Food Assistance, General Distribution, Nutrition and School Feeding programmes. The LWF was founded in Lund, Sweden, in Based in Geneva, Switzerland, it replaced the more informal Lutheran World Convention, which had been founded in The goal was to coordinate international activities of the many Lutheran churches, to provide a forum for discussions on theological and organizational issues, and to assist in philanthropy, missionary activity, and exchange of students and professors. The LWF has 145 member church bodies in 89 countries representing over 74 million Lutherans. Rev. Dr Musa Panti Filibus Musa Panti Filibus is an ordained pastor and theologian from The Lutheran Church of Christ (LCCN) in Nigeria who currently serves as the Archbishop of the LCCN. He has a broad range of experience with The Lutheran World Federation, having served in various positions between 2002 and 2013, including that of Deputy General Secretary. 35 MEDECINS SANS FRONTIERES INTERNATIONAL This year Médecins Sans Frontières partnered with WFP in 8 countries. Project activities included General Food Distribution, Nutrition and HIV/TB treatment. Médecins Sans Frontières was founded in 1971, in the aftermath of the Biafra secession, by a small group of French doctors and journalists who sought to expand accessibility to medical care across national boundaries and irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. The organisation emphasises "independence and impartiality", and explicitly precludes political, economic, or religious factors in its decision-making. For these reasons, it limits the amount of funding received from governments or intergovernmental organisation. These principles have allowed MSF to speak freely with respect to acts of war, corruption, or other hindrances to medical care or human well-being. MSF received the 1999 Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its members' continued efforts to provide medical care in acute crises, as well as raising international awareness of potential humanitarian disasters. Dr. Joanne Liu, International President Joanne Liu, M.D., C.M. is a Canadian paediatric doctor, Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Montreal, Professor of Practice of Medicine at McGill University. She has been president of MSF since Liu graduated from McGill University and started her career with Médecins Sans Frontières in 1996, working in Mauritania, Somali, Kenya, Palestine, Central African Republic and Sudan. MSF s mission consists of saving lives via basic healthcare, perform surgery, fight epidemics, rehabilitate and run hospitals and clinics, carry out vaccination campaigns, operate nutrition centres, and provide mental healthcare. MSF s activities include the treatment of injuries and disease, maternal care and the provision of humanitarian aid. Where necessary, MSF set up sanitation systems, supply safe drinking water, and distribute relief to assist survival. Medair is an international non-governmental organization NGO of humanitarian aid with a stated mission, "to relieve suffering in some of the world s most remote and devastated places." Medair was established in 1989 and its international and operational headquarters are in Switzerland. Medair is active in 31 countries, working in some of the most remote, hard-toreach places in the world. It is independent of any political, economic, or social authority. Medair lists its values as: hope, compassion, dignity, accountability, integrity, and faith. Mr. Neal Keny-Guyer, CEO Since 1994, Neal has served as Chief Executive Officer of Mercy Corps. A native of Tennessee, he started his career working with at-risk youth in Washington, D.C., and Atlanta. After attending business school, he moved to Thailand to aid Cambodian refugees with CARE and UNICEF. In 1982, Neal began his tenure with Save the Children, rising to become Director of Middle East, North Africa, and Europe. He holds a B.A. from Duke University, a master s degree from Yale University, and an honorary Doctorate from Portland State University, Oregon. Neal also serves as chairman of the board of InterAction, the largest alliance of US-based international NGOs. He is a member of the World Economic Forum s Global Future Council on the Humanitarian System, and of the Council on Foreign Relations. 38 MERCY MALAYSIA Mercy Malaysia partners with WFP through the Subang Malaysia UNHRD staging area that was opened by WFP and the Government of Malaysia in 2012 to complete the UNHRD network. Mercy Malaysia is an international non-profit organization focusing on providing medical relief, sustainable health-related development and risk reduction activities for vulnerable communities, in both crisis and non-crisis situation. Mercy Malaysia core values are: motivation, excellence, respect, collaboration and service. Mr. Amran Mahzan, Executive Director Arman Mahzan joined MERCY Malaysia Secretariat as the Deputy Executive Director in March 2016 upon relinquishing his position as Honorary Treasurer of MERCY Malaysia. He was later promoted to Executive Director in March He began his career in MERCY Malaysia as a technical volunteer in Ir. Amran graduated from the University of Malaya with a Bachelor s degree in Electrical Engineering. Like many international organizations involved in the delivery of medical and humanitarian aid to vulnerable communities, MERCY Malaysia has been actively involved in providing emergency assistance to affected populations. MERCY Malaysia began implementing its key domestic and international projects and programmes by utilizing a new approach, Total Disaster Risk Management (TDRM) in TDRM applies disaster risk management to all the phases of the disaster management cycle: emergency response, recovery, prevention/mitigation and preparedness/readiness. MERCY Malaysia s commitment to TDRM highlights the importance of discovering a clearer understanding and response to disaster management while also addressing the root causes and underlying factors that lead to disasters. In 2016, Mercy Malaysia helped citizens from 33 countries, including Malaysia, to build resilience and recover from shocks. Muslim Hands - United for the Needy is an international NGO working in over forty countries worldwide to help those affected by natural disasters, conflict and poverty. The organisation was established in 1993 in the UK. Muslim Hands has three main points of focus: development work, which tries to lift communities out of poverty with long-term sustainable solutions based on their needs; humanitarian work, assisting those immediately affected by conflict and natural disaster, and more recently; community welfare and development facilitating and developing local community based projects in the UK. Mr. Lakhte Hassanain, Secretary General Lakhte Hassanain is an Islamic scholar in the UK. Under his leadership, Muslim Hands works in over 50 countries, through projects ranging from disaster relief and medical aid, to education and the environment. Muslim Hands is dedicated to serving the most vulnerable people across the world by addressing the root causes of poverty and empowering communities. Areas of focus include: water, education, support to orphans, health, food assistance, livelihoods and environmental projects. 40 NORWEGIAN REFUGEE COUNCIL This year the Norwegian Refugee Council partnered with WFP in 10 countries. Project activities included Food Assistance and General Distribution, Asset creation, Nutrition, School Feeding, Capacity Development programmes. The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent humanitarian organisation which promotes and protects the rights of people affected by displacement. NRC pursues a holistic, rights-based approach, which includes emergency relief and early recovery, and which seeks to promote resilience and sustainable solutions to displacement. NRC is committed to the humanitarian principles of humanity, neutrality, independence and impartiality. Mr. Jan Egeland, Secretary General Jan Egeland was appointed Secretary General of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) in Egeland was UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator ( ), and currently holds the position as European Director of Human Rights Watch. Previously, Egeland was Secretary General for the Norwegian Red Cross, UN Special Advisor for the peace negotiations in Colombia and Norwegian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs from 1990 to Egeland has served on the board of the International Crisis Group and held several positions with Amnesty International. NRC s actions are concentrated on six core activities: Shelter (emergency shelter, housing, schools and establishment of other forms of public infrastructure), Food Security (distribution of food and non-food relief items), information, counselling and legal assistance (focus areas as housing, land and property, legal identity, statelessness and refugee status procedures), water, sanitation and hygiene (access to clear drinking water, sanitation and waste management facilities), education (education programmes targeted children and youth) and camp management. Mark Goldring, CEO Mr. Goldring was appointed as Chief Executive in January Previously, Goldring was CEO of Mencap, the UK's leading disability charity. In this time, Goldring led the growth of Mencap's support services and positioned the charity as a leading influencer on national disability and social care policy. Prior to this role he has decades of experience within international development including as chief executive of Voluntary Service Overseas, and with the United Nations Development (UNDP), the UK's Department for International Development (DFID) and as Oxfam's country director in Bangladesh in the early 1990s. s Oxfam GB is part of Oxfam International. 42 PAKISTAN RED CRESCENT The Pakistan Red Crescent is one of WFP s most important operational partners in the country, and is also one of four national societies taking part in the WFP/IFRC capacity strengthening pilot. Pakistan Red Crescent Society was founded in 1947 by nurse Saloni Malik. PRC strives to be a leading humanitarian organization, which is dynamic, self-reliant and committed to preventing and alleviating human suffering at the national and international level. The PRC society has helped millions of Pakistanis overcome disease and disaster, by offering support services such as food, water, medical services, cash transfers, disaster response and climate change adaptation. In 2016 PRC was active in all regions of Pakistan providing emergency and humanitarian assistance. 43 PEOPLE IN NEED (PIN) This year People in Need partnered with WFP in Afghanistan, Syria and Ukraine. Project activities included Food Assistance and General Distribution programmes. Humanitarian assistance to the victims of an armed conflict abroad was the initial undertaking of People in Need when it was first set up in the 1990s. PIN supports the fight against poverty and lack of education, local development, civil society and the principles of good governance while also helping people in emergencies, both in crises of war as well as in areas affected by natural disasters. s PIN s main activities include support for the development of civil society, livelihood and food security projects, implementation of education programmes, social projects such as construction of hospitals, water and sanitation projects and activities focused on local development. Šimon Pánek, Managing Director & CEO Simon Pánek is the managing director & CEO of PIN, which he co-founded in He also founded the news agency Epicentrum, which specializes in global conflict reporting. He was previously a foreign policy specialist on the Balkan region and human rights issues abroad in the presidential administration of Vaclav Havel. Since 2004, Pánek has chaired the Czech NGO development platform FoRS. Anne Birgitte Albrectsen, CEO Anne-Birgitte Albrectsen took over as CEO on September She is the former UN Assistant Secretary General and Deputy Executive Director for Management at the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). She has over 25 years of experience in international development, including senior leadership positions in times of significant change in the United Nations Development s (UNDP). s Plan programmes operate at multiple levels to advance children s rights and tackle the root causes of discrimination, exclusion and vulnerability across eight key areas: education, water and sanitation, sexual and reproductive health, early childhood care and development, disaster risk management, economic security, child protection and child participation. 45 PREMIERE URGENCE This year, Premiere Urgence partnered with WFP in 6 countries. Project activities included General Food Distribution, Nutrition, HIV/TB disease programmes. Première Urgence was established in 1992 at the initiative of Rodolphe Clair at the beginning of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina to help the besieged populations in Sarajevo. Since its establishment, Première Urgence has intervened in 35 countries in areas of armed conflict, natural disasters and forgotten crises. Premiere Urgence s objective is to provide a comprehensive response to all the basic needs of the populations affected by humanitarian crises in an emergency, so as to enable them to regain their autonomy and dignity. Mr. Thierry Mauricet, Managing Director Mauricet co-founded Première Urgence in 1992 and has worked with the organization since its inception. He became managing director in He is a graduate of the Institut Europeen des Affaires business school. Première Urgence helps the most vulnerable populations. Through emergency and postemergency actions, the organization sets up programs for food and non-food distribution, medical care, access to water, sanitation, shelter construction, rehabilitation of health structures and schools, food security and economic recovery. Nancy Wilson, President and CEO Nancy Wilson has served as CEO of Relief International since March Previously, Nancy completed ten years in the leadership of the Jonathan M. Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University. Her prior experience includes managing the livelihoods, emerging micro-finance and gender grant portfolios in East Africa for the Ford Foundation, and leading capacity-building projects on adult education and NGO strengthening in Namibia as Chief of Party for World Education. Nancy led the customer relationship management division in SubSaharan Africa with PriceWaterhouseCoopers while stationed in Johannesburg, South Africa. s Relief International runs life-sustaining programmes across 19 countries in Asia, Africa and the Middle East. SP specializes in meeting critical needs for victims of conflict, disaster, famine, and epidemics, often working through ministry partners on the ground, providing food, water, shelter, medicine, and other assistance. 48 SASAKAWA AFRICA ASSOCIATION Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) has partnered with WFP s Purchase for Progress (P4P) initiative in three countries Ethiopia, Mali and Uganda. Sasakawa Africa Association (SAA) is an international agricultural development NGO registered in Geneva, Switzerland. It was co-founded in 1986 by Nobel Laureate Dr. Norman Borlaug, Japanese philanthropist Ryoichi Sasakawa (Nippon Foundation), and former US President Jimmy Carter. Working with national partners, its programmes have improved the productivity and profitability of smallholder farmers by encouraging the adoption of higher-yielding varieties and enhanced production practices. Fumiko Iseki, Executive Director Fumiko Iseki serves as the Executive Officer, overseeing the whole operation of the foundation with the President. She has rich experiences mainly in reconstruction assistance of conflict-affected countries in Africa. Previously, with UN WFP, she was covering the refugee operations in Ethiopia, as well as the program management in Zambia. With Global Link Management, Inc., she served as a consultant for JICA/JPF/JETRO with expertise in bridging humanitarian and development assistance. Corresponding with SAA s mission, vision and strategic goals, and given a rapidly changing natural, economic and political environment in Africa and the world, SAA has adjusted its approach to extension to reach more marginalized farmers, faster, and in a cost effective manner. Five themes have been established to address the whole value chain of technology transfer and to improving extension services for African smallholder farmers: Crop Productivity Enhancement, Post-harvest and Agroprocessing, Public-Private Partnership and Market Access, Human Resource Development, Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning and Sharing (MELS). Ms. Carolyn Miles, President & CEO Carolyn Miles is President & Chief Executive Officer of Save the Children. Miles joined the organization in 1998, was COO from , and became President and CEO in September Under her senior leadership, the organization has more than doubled the number of children it reaches with nutrition, health, education and other programs. Resources were just under $700m in Prior to Save the Children, she worked in the private sector in Hong Kong for American Express and as an entrepreneur. SAADO - Smile Again Africa Development Organization is a national non-profit humanitarian and development organization dedicated to working with the youth and their communities to reach their full potential. Founded in 2011, SAADO works across all the states of South Sudan promoting social cohesion and empowering communities to tackle the causes of poverty and injustice. They provide humanitarian assistance to families affected by disaster & conflict while partnering with communities for long-term solutions to alleviate poverty. Motivated by the potential in the youth, they optimize their role to foster peaceful co-existence and economic empowerment in South Sudan. 51 SOCIAL AND INDUSTRIAL FOODSERVICE INSTITUTE (SIFI) WFP partners with SIFI through school feeding programmes in 6 countries - Armenia, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Morocco, Tunisia and Jordan. The Social and Industrial Foodservice Institute (SIFI) was created in 2004, and has been an independent non-profit organization since The Institute develops state-of-the-art technologies to organise and manage non-commercial food service systems as integral elements of state infrastructure. It operates in the following areas: school nutrition, industry food service, hospital food service, transport food service, prison food service, and food service at mass events. s SIFI has developed a cross-sectoral approach to the development of sustainable solutions to improve the food security and nutrition of vulnerable populations. Project activities include: education, health, agriculture, food processing and infrastructure. Vladimir Chernigov, President Vladimir Chernigov is currently President of SIFI and also Councillor of the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation. He has extensive experience and management skills in the sphere of international cooperation and food security issues, including the implementation of joint projects with organisations such as WFP and FAO, and working on the food safety strategy of the Russian Federation. Since its establishment in 2004, SIFI has focused on working with different regional and international organisations in order to eliminate undernourishment of different groups, studying the problems of nutrition in various fields, and the quality and safety of food products. 52 SUDANESE RED CRESCENT WFP has partnered with the Sudanese Red Crescent to implement the following activities Food Assistance and General Distribution, Nutrition and School Feeding. The Sudanese Red Crescent Society (SRCS) is the biggest and most decentralized and widespread humanitarian organization operating in Sudan. The society was established in The National Society covers nearly the entire country with 15 state branches and several sub-branches/units in the provinces/localities and administrative units, with a nationwide community-based network of 35,000 active volunteers and another 300,000 who can be deployed as need arises. It has well-established working relations with public authorities at federal, state and local levels, and good partnership and collaboration with Movement partners and UN specialized agencies and national and international NGOs working in Sudan. Osman Gafar Abdalla, Secretary General Mr. Abdalla started at the Sudanese Red Crescent as a volunteer in In 1994 he became the Executive Director of SRCS Kassala and Gadarif branches and then in 1996 a Member of the Central Committee. Before working for the SRCS, Mr. Abdalla worked as an engineer after graduating with a Diploma of Communications Engineering in 1987 and completing an engineering fellowship at the Technology College Institute. SRCS has a mandate to run First Aid, emergency response, health interventions and other humanitarian operations. The Society is well known by the public for its humanitarian work and community service through many years of emergency relief and community-based programming. Sudanese Red Crescent Society implements various humanitarian programmes and projects that include but not limited to: health, first aid, epidemic preparedness, mine risk reduction, tracing, disaster management and aids programs. 53 TURKISH RED CRESCENT Since 2012, WFP has joined forces with the Turkish Red Crescent (TRC) to assist vulnerable Syrian refugees through an e-food card that can be redeemed against nutritious foods in local supermarkets. Together, WFP and TRC have rolled out the Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN), the first social assistance scheme using direct cash-transfers to cover the everyday needs of the most vulnerable refugee families. The programme now supports over one million refugees, helping families afford the basic necessities from food to rent, to medicine and warm clothing for winter. Organizational Facts The Turkish Red Crescent is the largest humanitarian organization in Turkey and is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. The society is a not-for-profit, volunteer-based social service institution providing unconditional aid and service, and is a corporate body governed by special legal provisions. Organizational Facts Welthungerhilfe is one of the largest private aid organisations in Germany, independent of politics and religion. It was established in 1962, as the German section of the "Freedom from Hunger Campaign", one of the world's first initiatives aimed at the eradication of hunger. They provide aid from rapid disaster relief to long-term development cooperation projects.
