5 What it is EIGE is launching today its Resource & Documentation Centre (RDC): a unique European source of gender equality knowledge, where EIGE collects, processes and makes available data, tools, methods, good practices and resources on gender equality. With the ultimate goal to make gender equality-related knowledge available at the right time to the right actors, the RDC allows quick and easy access to more than 238,000 resources on gender equality. It provides the best quality gender statistics currently available, research, methods, tools and good practices in implementing gender equality policies and gender mainstreaming that have been processed and produced by EIGE and other sources. A platform to facilitate an exchange of knowledge and information between gender equality actors from all over the EU through the European Network on Gender Equality EuroGender is also a feature of the RDC. The long-term objective is to put together the memory of all gender equality work at EU and Member State level and to make it accessible to all, actively fostering cooperation between gender equality actors across the EU. This unique innovative and practical tool will: assist policy makers and practitioners in locating key resources on gender equality, facilitate an exchange of knowledge amongst those with an interest in gender equality policy and practice, and provide a space to discuss and debate key issues on gender equality. The context There is a multitude of gender equality actors at the EU and Member State level. The vast amount of data, knowledge and resources in the field of gender equality they produce or deal with are not always easily identified or accessible to decision makers, practitioners, researchers or citizens. Knowledge about existing relevant resources is crucial to strengthen the capacity of policy makers. With its specific focus on gender equality, EIGE s RDC provides the necessary resources for those who are seeking to mainstream gender into policies and programmes, or looking for good practices on effective gender equality measures, as well as providing access to reliable and comparable gender statistics considered to be important levers for achieving de facto gender equality. It is in this context that EIGE s RDC was created. The setting up of a documentation centre and the establishment of a virtual European-wide network on gender equality is in line with the founding regulation of the Institute. EIGE s RDC contributes also to the implementation of the Commissions Strategy for Equality between Women and Men Current status EIGE s RDC is built around three main functions: Compiling, organising and making available, through a single access point, gender equality related resources that were, until now, scattered across a multitude of sources throughout the EU; Disseminating the knowledge produced by the Institute; Provide an online collaborative platform where decision makers, experts and other stakeholders can debate and share their expertise and resources in the field of gender equality. and has three main instruments to accomplish these goals: An online and physical documentation centre A knowledge centre EuroGender the European online network on gender equality 8 Agenda Agenda 9 Examples of what we do In 2012, a special collection of information was produced and made available online on gender-based violence with more than 26,000 resources. Since 2013, collections of resources are being made available on gender and media, gender and climate change, reconciliation between work, family and private life, men and gender equality, and institutional mechanisms for the advancement of women, with a specific focus on gender mainstreaming. These resources are available through an expanding network of partnerships between EIGE and leading documentation and information centres in the EU Member States. To date, EIGE has established partnerships with: Atria institute for gender equality and women s history in Amsterdam, Amazone Resource centre for equality between women and men in Brussels, Cid-femmes et genre Information and documentation centre for women and gender issues in Luxembourg, Gender Library of the Centre for transdisciplinary gender studies at Humboldt University in Berlin, KvinnSam National resource library for gender studies at Gothenburg University and, most recently, Kvinfo The Danish centre for research and information on gender, equality and diversity. The knowledge centre comprises EIGE s own research reports and specialised databases made available online. EuroGender the European Network on Gender Equality, an online collaborative platform which brings together decision makers, practitioners, researchers, individuals and organisations to exchange views, experiences, information and relevant data in the field of gender equality. It fosters the exchange and dissemination of information among the centres, bodies, organisations and experts dealing with gender equality to better support and encourage research and optimise the use of available resources. Populated by EIGE s stakeholders database, it hosts regularly online discussions. Physical documentation centre located in the EU House in Vilnius is composed of: A public Entry Point, which provides information and free publications on gender equality work in the EU, reading facilities, free WiFi and other amenities. The entry point is open to all citizens and is freely available to host gender-equality related events (film screenings, discussions, book launches, exhibitions etc.) The examples of organisations using the facilities include the Lithuanian Institute for Social Integration, the Soroptimist Union and LGBTQ Youth. It is also possible to search the database of EIGE s RDC collections from here. A small, specialised library organised around five main areas: the core collection, a grey literature collection, EIGE s collection, multimedia resources, serials, periodicals and journals. Find out more at: The European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) is an autonomous body of the European Union, established to contribute to and strengthen the promotion of gender equality, including gender mainstreaming in all EU policies and the resulting national policies, and the fight against discrimination based on sex, as well as to raise EU citizens awareness of gender equality.
