1 International Conference Gulf Region: Changing the Status Quo? Tuesday, May 22, 2012 Venue: Mirror Hall, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic, Loretánské nám. 5, Prague

3 Conference Synopsis This conference will focus on the geopolitical importance of the Gulf Region. The rivalry among regional actors remains high. The region is highly militarized and dependent on fossil fuel exports. Sectarian and ethnic cleavages are a source of friction in many of the countries throughout the region. Authoritarian rule appears deeply entrenched and resilient. The Arab uprisings raised the question about a possible public uprising among the traditional monarchies, as well as republics. US withdrawal from Iraq has an impact on the security of the country, as well as the region as a whole. Iran s nuclear ambitions could change the current status quo of the region dramatically. Last but not least, the crisis in Syria has an impact on the position of Iran in the region and the future of the Middle East Peace Process. The aim of this conference is to improve our understanding of the current situation in the Gulf States and the impact of the Arab uprisings on the region. A special focus of the conference is on Iran and its neighbors. Irena Kalhousová Chief Analyst Prague Security Studies Institute The Prague Security Studies Institute and Heinrich Böll Foundation would like to especially recognize the generous support and assistance of the Embassy the United States in the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Czech Republic, without which this conference would not be possible.

8 Prague Security Studies Institute THE PRAGUE SECURITY STUDIES INSTITUTE (PSSI) is a non-profit, non-governmental organization established in early 2002 to advance the building of a just, secure, democratic, free-market society in the Czech Republic and other post-communist states. PSSI s mission is to help build an ever-growing group of informed and security-minded policy-makers dedicated to the development of democratic institutions and values in the Czech Republic and its regional neighbors. PSSI offers programs that meet the critical requirement to equip new generations of young leaders to manage the complex, security-related challenges of the 21st century. To fulfill its mission, PSSI undertakes to organize a variety of activities under its Security Scholars Program; Program of Atlantic Security Studies; Corporate Council Program; and other outreach projects and training courses. Please visit the Public Communications Section to download further information about PSSI. PSSI also aims to identify and analyze foreign policy and security-related issues in the area of transatlantic relations, and to propose practical and prudent policies to address these and other security challenges. Heinrich Böll Foundation The Heinrich Böll Foundation is part of the Green political movement that has developed worldwide as a response to the traditional politics of socialism, liberalism, and conservatism. Our main tenets are ecology and sustainability, democracy and human rights, self-determination and justice. We place particular emphasis on gender democracy, meaning social emancipation and equal rights for women and men. We are also committed to equal rights for cultural and ethnic minorities and to the societal and political participation of immigrants. Finally, we promote non-violence and proactive peace policies. Our namesake, the writer and Nobel Prize laureate Heinrich Böll, personifies the values we stand for: defense of freedom, civic courage, tolerance, open debate, and the valuation of art and culture as independent spheres of thought and action. To achieve our goals, we seek strategic partnerships with others who share our values. We are an independent organization that is headquartered in the Federal Republic of Germany. The Prague Office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation was established on August 21, 1990 and was the foundation s first-ever office abroad. The office is responsible for the foundation s programs in Central and Eastern Europe focusing on the Czech Republic, Hungary and Slovakia.
