2004 KULTUUR & SPORT CULTURE AND SPORTS LAULJAT HIIGELSUURE LAULULAVA ALL VÕIMAS VAADATA JA KUULATA! SINGERS UNDER A HUGE STAGE POWERFUL TO WATCH AND HEAR "Nüüd, mil Eesti liitub ELiga, ei peaks meid hülgama. Kommunism hoidis meid seitsmekümne aasta vältel eemal kõigist peamistest kunstilistest voogudest. Me olime liiga isoleeritud. (FAZ, 28.04) lauljat hiigelsuure laululava all võimas vaadata ja kuulata! Kolme balti rahva laulupeod In Tallinn s Museum of Occupations, it is possible to forget that the museum is a glance into a long and unpleasant era of Estonian history. The exhibit is modest and sensible, not of the hard-shocking type seen in similar museums in Latvia and Lithuania. Obviously, life under dictatorship was anything but easy, yet the exhibit of inventions by Soviet engineers offers something of an ironic perspective of the invaders. (HS, 04.09) "Just now, at the time when Estonia is joining the EU, the country should not be forgotten. We have been isolated from the rest of the world. The " minor communistic incident" in our history kept us intellectually isolated for seventy years. But now and everybody should know that we are an enlightened nation, a marvellous place for culture!", finds conductor Paavo Järvi. (Trouw, 16.06) SONG FESTIVAL Choral music has a strong impact on Estonia s culture, perception and politics. The Estonians won their freedom with the Singing Revolution. When one fifth of the population gathered to sing national songs in the 87

2004 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR on muutunud tohututeks vaatemängudeks, mis meelitavad ligi ohtralt turiste, säilitades sellele vaatamata oma eheduse. Soome presidendipaar ise jäi peole kavatsetust kauemaks, kuulamaks rahvushümni "Mu Isamaa" maailma suurima koori esituses. Suudate te ette kujutada Londoni Sümfooniaorkestrit sama tegemas?" (Figaroscope, 10.03) fall of 1988, Soviet forces did not dare to interfere. The Estonian singing culture is deep-rooted in the folklore of the dark winter nights, 5000-year old runic and pastoral songs from Livonia, German church music and the Baltic German song heritage. EU accession will also be celebrated with a song festival. (FAZ, 28.04) singers under a giant song dais a magnificent experience for one s eyes and ears! The song festivals of three Baltic nations have emerged as giant spectacles, drawing many tourists, while maintaining their purity. The Estonian song festivals are the oldest and most famous, representing folk art in the most positive sense of the word. In the past, song festivals were reflections of national protest. The spontaneous and sincere self-admiration, pure joy and openness are just contagious. Such sympathy could only be inspired by a small, long-wronged nation. (NZZ, 19.07) Tarja Halonen took her guest Romano Prodi to Tallinn s song festival. The Finnish Presidential couple stayed longer than planned, to hear the world s largest choir perform the national anthem Mu Isamaa. (HS, 5.07) Most of Estonia s leadership as well as neighbouring Presidents Tarja Halonen and Vaira Vike-Freiberga enjoyed the Estonian song festival from the front row. ETV s live broadcast showed the Finnish President obviously enjoying herself. The participation of a record number of foreign choirs was not hindered by all the songs being sung in Estonian. (TS, 5.07) MUSICS The music of the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, residing in Germany, is for those who find modern classical music too complicated. Pärt has pioneered since the late 1970s a minimalist, mystical compositional technique he called "tintinnabulation". His compositions are characterized by spare notation, triads, simple melody and silence. Pärt s works, such as Fratres and Tabula Rasa, do not merely please the ear. This music proposes something more prayerful than much of what we listened to during the second half of the 20th century. Following Pärt is a bumper crop of young Estonian composers, such as Erkki-Sven Tüür and Urmas Sisask. (FT, 1/2.05) In 1979, the day after Järvi had performed Pärt s Credo with the Estonian Symphony Orchestra in Tallinn, the entire orchestra was sacked. A year later, Järvi and his family packed their bags for America. "Long before that," Järvi remembers, "I was becoming worn down by the endless counting of points: how many Russian works had to be played; how often you could or could not perform Estonian music. And our orchestra members had to pick potatoes on collective farms. Can you imagine the London Symphonic Orchestra doing that?" (The Times, 19.01) 88

2004 KULTUUR & SPORT CULTURE AND SPORTS When the Parisian orchestra invited Paavo Järvi from cold Estonia, no one doubted the repertoire would echo the conductor s own roots. Like his famous father Neeme, who has tied his name to Sibelius, Paavo is also trying to embrace Nordic composers whose works are not widely performed elsewhere. (Figaroscope, 10.03) "Because of Sibelius every Finn thinks he can compose music, just as every Swede seems to believe he can play tennis because of Björn Borg." How to explane Paavo Järvi s fascination to Scandinavian, especially Finnish music? "Estonians and Finns are almost like brothers. We share the same linguistic history, the Finno-Ugric one, and our folktales are almost identical. (Het Parool, 16.04) JÄRVIDE DÜNASTIA NOORIM VÕSU LAULUPIDU JUHATAMAS YOUNGEST OF THE JÄRVI S DYNASTY CONDUCTING THE SONG FESTIVAL "Tänu Sibeliusele arvab iga soomlane, et ta saaks hakkama heliloominguga, nagu iga rootslane näib oskavat tänu Björn Borgile tennist mängida." Millega seletada Paavo Järvi kiindumust skandinaavia, eriti soome muusika vastu? "Eestlased ja soomalsed on peaaegu vennad. Me jagame sarnast keelelist ajalugu, kuuludes soome-ugri keelte rühma ning meie rahvapärimus on pea identne." (FT, 4.11) Peatselt Euroopasse kuuluval Tallinnal seisavad ees toredad ajad. Aprillis toimub rahvusvaheline jazzifestival "Jazzkaar", suvel toimuvatel vanalinnapäevadel lõbutsevad keskaegsetesse kostüümidesse riietunud tallinlased munakivisillutisega tänavatel keskajast pärinevate hoonete vahel. (L Express, 1.03) Estonian conductor Neeme Järvi, a U.S. citizen, who has conducted the world s top symphonic orchestras and whom his website immodestly but accurately describes as "one of the most sought-after conductors of his generation", says it s time to drop the routine notion that top performances should only be expected from orchestras who have made their name already. Järvi has conducted in Europe and America alike. (FT, 4.11) Fun times await Tallinn, a city soon-to-be part of Europe. April brings the Jazzkaar international jazz festival, while Talliners clad in medieval costumes will rejoice on the cobblestone streets amid medieval buildings at the Old Town Days, to be held in the summer. (L Express, 1.03) An opera can be staged in a tennis hall, where two elite events could emerge into a national event. The Estonian National Opera, in co-operation with the Malmö Opera and Musical Theatre, is producing "Aida" at the Onistar tennis hall in Rocca al Mare. The orchestra will be conducted by Arvo Volmer, former conductor of the Oulu City Orchestra. Meanwhile, repairs are underway in the Estonia Opera to expand the stage and improve acoustics on the eve of its 100th anniversary. (TS, 12.10) Raimond Valgre, the author of "Saaremaa Waltz", may well be dubbed the Estonian Gershwin. He had composed at least 60 pieces, many of them hugely popular even today. The composer s life ended early, in his forties, largely due to the war and alcohol, his only remaining comfort. (TS, 16.10) 89

2004 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR Ooperietenduse saab korraldada ka tennisekeskuses, kahe elitaarseks peetud vaatemängu kohtumisest võib sündida rahvapidu. Eesti rahvusooper lavastab Rocca al Mare Onistari tennisehallis ettekandele tuleva "Aida" koostöös Malmö Ooperi- ja Muusikateatriga, orkestrit juhatab Arvo Volmer, endine Oulu linnaorkestri peadirigent. Estonia peahoones jätkub samal ajal remont, mille käigus laiendati lava ja parandati akustikat, et tähistada peatselt saabuvat sajandat tegutsemisaastat. (TS, 12.10) "Saaremaa valsi" autorit Raimond Valgret võib nimetada Eesti Gershwiniks, tema loomingust on tuntud 60 lugu, mis pole ka tänapäeval populaarsust minetanud. Helilooja elu lõppes varakult, neljakümnendates, paljuski olid selles süüdi sõda ja ainsaks lohutuseks jäänud alkohol. (TS, 16.10) Šveits on Istanbuli Eurovisiooni võistlusel saadud nullpunktist õppust võtnud. (HS, 13.05) KIRJANDUS Juhus viskas mu lauale eepose "Kalevipoeg" täispika tõlke prantsuse keelde, eepose, millel rajaneb eesti kirjandus, keel ja rahvuslik identiteet. Tundsin varem selle eepose üht vana, a välja antud ingliskeelset versiooni, mille üks mu Genfi Switzerland has drawn conclusions from its zero score at the Istanbul Eurovision Competition. This year, the candidate performers had to show TV and stage experience as well as strong rankings on music charts. The Estonian girl band Vanilla Ninja, who have already made a name in Germany, will defend the honour of the Swiss. However, the producer and composer are of Swiss origin. (NZZ, 10.11) The popular Estonian rapper Chalice recently gave his first overseas performance in Stockholm s Zenit cafe. With baggy trousers, oversize sneakers and a huge cap, his appearance is that of any other hip hop artist. You can only tell the difference once he opens his mouth Chalice raps in Estonian. Chalice approves Estonia s accession to the EU, but lashes out at the political circus. "Those who cannot make it as an athlete or doctor, can always become a politician," he notes indignantly. (Östlövet, 06) Villu Tamme, front man of the punk group JMKE that made waves in Finland in the 80s and 90s, admits his punk impulse used to stem from a Sex Pistols poster from a Suosikki pop magazine and the band s concert broadcast on Finnish TV. The group s first appearance before a Finnish crowd was in 1989 at an event called the Leftist Forum, organized by the SKDL and the Communist Party, the irony in this is that Finnish parties shared the same ideals as the Estonian Communist Party, who afforded the band and its supporters all but warm treatment back at home. (HS, 13.05) LITERATURE Chance dropped a copy the French translation of "Kalevipoeg" on my table. This is the epic that founded Estonian literature, language and national identity. I had previously known an old English version of it, issued in 1895, which one of my Genevan acquaintances had once picked up at a London antique shop. Estonia s national legend, written down from folklore by several consecutive compilers during the first half of 19th century, awoke the national thought against Germanisation. A century later, the German oppressors had been replaced by the Russians from whom the Estonians hid behind the back of their friendly giant. Some time after the restoration of Estonian independence, my Genevan acquaintance took his English "Kalevipoeg" to Estonia. After arriving, my acquaintance decided to grant the two-volume edition to the University of Tartu. (Le Temps, 16.06) When "Kalevipoeg" was first printed from , Estonia belonged to the Russian Empire, but was in fact ruled by German barons who had ruled here since the 13th century. The Estonian elite decided to write down the folklore and oral tradition, crafting a text that boosted unity to stand against the German- Russian double patronage. Kalevipoeg could be a cousin of Gargantua, a likeable giant at war with dark forces. These pages glow with miraculous poetry, 90

2004 KULTUUR & SPORT CULTURE AND SPORTS tuttavatest oli kunagi Londonist antikvariaadist ostnud. (NRC Handelsblad, 1/2004) Tänapäeva eesti ilukirjanduse meistriteos on kahtlemata Jaan Krossi "Keisri hull". (The Guardian, 1.05) KÄBI LARETEI PIANISTIST KIRJANIK KÄBI LARETEI THE PIANIST AND WRITER such as a darling explanation of how the hedgehog got its spines. The epic promoted the rapid development of Estonian literature. The importance of Estonia literature was revaluated and the teaching of it began at schools. (Témoignage chrêtien, 10.06) Women s tears conceive lakes; men s swords slash the mountains Wonder and tragedy are mixed throughout the Estonian epic "Kalevipoeg" compiled in the 19th century to affirm the national feelings against the Russian occupation. It is a kind of romanticism that has been beyond our courage for a long time now. (Le Progrès, 24.06) How much history can a small country digest? Quite a lot, considering the extensive work of Estonia s famous writer Jaan Kross. Book after book, the author writes about his country, preventing its history from sinking into oblivion. His style is crystal-clear and precise, his knowledge of history astonishing, but not dull for a single moment. Nobody personifies Estonia s history better than Jaan Kross does. (NRC Handelsblad, 1/2004) The masterpiece of modern Estonian fiction is undoubtedly Jaan Kross s extraordinary "The Czar s Madman". A Baltic German baron commits political suicide by telling Tsar Alexander I what is wrong with his empire, and a conflict of the past bears down on Estonia s communist era with wonderful lightness. Tõnu Õnnepalu s "Border State" is a novel of a life he lived on the margins of Europe. In its focus on aimlessness and inconsistency, it echoes Kross s convic- 91

2004 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR Ülevaade mitmekordse Nobeli kirjanduspreemia nominendi Jaan Krossi elukäigust, mõtetest ja tunnetest pärast Eesti iseseisvumist. Eestlastel on tavaks küsida endilt irooniliselt, kas see ongi see riik, mida me soovisime. Võiks öelda, et negatiivsed aspektid domineerivad, kuid mina olen säilitanud piisavalt naiivsust nägemaks eelkõige asjade positiivset külge." (Prantsuse keeles on aastal ilmumas Jaan Krossi "Paigallend" Antoine Chalvini tõlkes) (Le Figaro, 13.08) "Nagu tõlkes" on Käbi Laretei seitsmes autobiograafiline teos ja seni tähelepanuväärseim, kuna käsitleb abielu Ingmar Bergmaniga. (HS, 26.09) tion that "in space we can return to things, in time we haven t the possibility to return to them". (The Guardian, 1.05) An overview of the life, thoughts and feelings of several-time Nobel literature prize nominee Jaan Kross after the restoration of Estonian independence. "Only in the rarest occasions do positive changes not bring along the negative. Estonians are used to wondering, ironically, if this is the state that we hoped for. One could say negative aspects are dominant, but I have retained enough naivety to notice the positive side of things above all," said Kross. (Jaan Kross s "Treading Air" is to be published in French in 2005, translated by Antoine Chalvin) (Le Figaro, 13.08) "Like a Translation" is Käbi Laretei s seventh autobiographical book and most significant to date, covering her marriage to Ingvar Bergman. According to Laretei, it is her most intimate book and it deals with her split identity. "It has been a pain living in forced exile, not being able to visit my homeland in 48 years," says Käbi Laretei. As for her next book, Laretei says it would be nice to deal with the meaning of Estonia s 50-year long isolation from the world. (SvD, 26.11) Ilmar Talve s "Estonian Cultural History" that hit Finnish bookstores early this summer provides a thorough overview of Estonian cultural history from the Middle Ages up to the 1920s. Finnish readers best know Ilmar Talve as a fiction writer because of his novel "Journeys of Juhanson" published in 1961 and reprinted in (TS, 2.06) The memoirs of Professor Ilmar Talve of Turu University, whose life journeys carried him from Estonia to Germany, to Sweden and eventually to Finland, are now available in Finnish as well. The author, who has had a chance to serve in the armies of four nations, seeks to convey the fate and the vantage points of Estonian refugees, which were sometimes misinterpreted even by his contemporaries in the Estonian homeland. (TS, 01.10) The largely autobiographical "Soldier, God s Servant" by lieutenant colonel Leo Kunnas of the Estonian Defence Forces now a member of NATO is to be valued most for the authenticity of the described events, while weaknesses deriving from limited literary experience have sometimes hindered the fullest development of some subplots. For young Estonian men, the socialism that ended just over a decade ago was not all about queues and the black market it also meant a possibility of being drawn into the Afghanistan war or thrown into jail for illegal border-crossing attempts. 8 2004 KULTUUR & SPORT CULTURE AND SPORTS EESTI MÄRK EESTI MEHE RINNAL ESTONIA S TRADEMARK KUNST Balti riikide astumisega ELi on Helsingi moodsa kunsti muuseumi näitus "Faster Than History" erakordselt hästi ajastatud. Näitus keskendub kunsti hetkeseisule Eestis, Lätis, Leedus ja Venemaal. Eestit esindavate Erkki-Erich Merila ja Arbo Tammiksaare meelest on nende riigi uus logo "Welcome to Estonia" üsna koomiline. Nad näitavad oma arvamust kasutades modellidena irvitavaid skinheade, kelle T-särgiga kaetud õllekõhtudel logo ilutseb. Läänemere idakalda kunstnike ühisjoonena võib aga välja tuua lõbususe tõsistest sihtidest hoolimata. (The Times, 3.03) Keset tohutut vormiderägastikku, ideedevälgatusi ja tuhandeid visandeid seisab järsku üks hobune keset Veneetsiat. Pilbastest kokku klopsitud. Selle kõhus hea koht. Täiesti nihestunud, need eestlased. Neid kutsutakse maailma kuulsaimale arhitektuuribiennaalile. ARTS The Baltic republics are in the news regarding their imminent entry into the European Union. Therefore, particularly timely is the new exhibit Faster Than History in Helsinki s Museum of Contemporary Art. It concentrates on the state of art today in Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Russia. Herkki-Erich Merila and Arbo Tammiksaar from Estonia obviously find their country s new logo, "Welcome to Estonia" rather comical and show their opinion by recruiting snarling skinheads (actually backstage technicians) to hold it up in front of their T-shirted beer guts. The work of artists from the countries on the Eastern side of the Baltic is extremely cheerful and at the same time makes a serious point. (The Times, 3.03) Amid a vast myriad of forms, flashing ideas and thousands of sketches, a horse is suddenly standing in the heart of Venice. Cobbled together from random pieces of wood and in its stomach the can. Totally twisted, those Estonians. They are invited to the world s most notable architecture biennial. What do they do? Erect a dry lavatory. And lots of pictures of other self-made places; constructed out of a vending machine or built in the 93

2004 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR Tehnitsismi, glamuuri ja perfektsionismi keskele panevad eestlased püsti oma ürgkoha. Hobune on ilmselt Trooja hobune, mis varjab endas küsimust milleks neid arhitekte vaja on? (Die Zeit, 16.09) Eesti paviljon asub varjulises kohas, võiks öelda, et pigem biennaali külalistetoas kui paviljonis. Kuid see ei hoia eemale väsimatuid uudishimutsejaid, sest siin on kokku kogutud kõik Eesti biennaalipeldikud. See riigike on siin üles pannud oma ajaloolised välikäimlad. Kaasaegne biomorfoloogiliste imeehitiste futuristlik revolutsioon ei näi Eestit üldse puudutavat. Eesti räägib asjast endast. Mitte just väga õnnestunult. (SZ, 11.09) Eesti peaminister Juhan Parts andis Saksamaa kantsler Gerhard Schröderile üle Albrecht Düreri maali 16.sajandist, mille Punaarmee võttis Bremeni Kunstihoonest sõjasaagiks. Schröder nimetas seda "suureks päevaks" Saksa-Eesti suhetes. Teos leiti eelmisel suvel Kadrioru kunstimuuseumi laost. Paljuski on tegemist aasta loominguga, kuid sama hästi võiks taieseid nende kitšilikkuse tõttu pidada ka paarikümne aasta vanusteks. Kostabi, olles New Yorgis rohkem tuntud performance i tegija ning muusikuna, esitleb tegelasi piltidel inimnäoliste robotitena, kes paigutuvad eri miljöödesse: itaaliapärasest geomeetriliselt abstraktseni. (The Washington Post, 17.06) Eestlane Jaan Manitski põgenes lapsena Rootsi, sai rikkaks ABBA abil, tuli tagasi Eestisse, töötas välisministrina ja rajas nüüd oma kunstimuuseumi. "Kunst on minu jaoks hobi. A crazy idea, but equally daring. Amid technicism, glamour and perfectionism, the Estonians have built a place of ancient Estonians. The horse is probably Trojan, an embodiment of the question who needs the architects anyway? (Die Zeit, 16.09) The Estonian pavilion stands at a remote location in what is rather the biennial s guest-house than the main pavilion itself. But this does not hold back the restless visitors it is a collection of Estonian biennial outhouses. The small country has displayed its historical outhouses. The futuristic revolution of contemporary bio-morphological building miracles appears to have passed Estonia by. Estonia speaks of the time itself. Not too successfully. (SZ, 11.09) Under the approving looks of the German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, Estonian Prime Minister Juhan Parts gave back the 16th century altar-piece of Albrecht Dürer, which was taken by the Red Army as war-booty, to the Kunsthalle in Bremen. Schröder spoke of "a great day" in the German-Estonian relationship. The altar-piece was discovered from the cellars of the Estonian National Art Museum in Kadriorg last summer. (De Gazet van Antwerpen, 25.05) The paintings of Mark Kalev Kostabi will reinvigorate your 1980s nostalgia. His canvases can be seen at the Estonian Embassy. Many of the works are painted in 2004, may as well be 20 years old so caught are they in a kitschy time warp. Kostabi, best known as a New York art scene-maker and sometimes musician, peoples his canvases with mannequin-android types posed in a variety of backgrounds from the Italianate to the geometrically abstract. (The Washington Post, 17.06) Estonian Jaan Manitski fled to Sweden as a child, made a fortune out of ABBA, returned to Estonia, served as Foreign Minister and has now founded an art museum. "Art is my hobby. I am not an expert, neither had I purchased any art before," Manitski explains. He says to have fulfilled his duty to Estonia in three years. "I left politics after all Estonian enterprises had been privatised," says the former Estonian Foreign Minister. (HS, 19.07) EDUCATION, LANGUAGE AND SCIENCE Education is a priority for the "Baltic tigers". For Estonians, Latvians and Lithuanians, the creation of a state begins with the modernizing of state machinery. The higher education systems of these countries emphasise fields that will secure the economic development of the Baltic States. Several economic and technical courses are taught in parallel in Estonian, Latvian or Lithuanian and English or in English only. (La Tribune, 23.11) 94

2004 KULTUUR & SPORT CULTURE AND SPORTS The pace of changes in the Baltic educational systems is faster than we can imagine. While the British system is centralized, the former Soviet satellites afford a great degree of freedom to educational institutions. Graduates of transport, logistics and car repair specialties, most popular at Tallinn College of Engineering, have no problem finding a future job. The school is seeking to hire more English-speaking lecturers. (The Guardian, 20.07) The newcomers contribute to the EU both culturally and linguistically. Half of central Europe s national languages are Slavic in origin. Latvian and Lithuanian stem from the Baltic branch of the Indo-European language tree. Estonian and Hungarian are Uralic languages, distantly related to one another, closely related to Finnish in the case of Estonian, and perhaps more distantly related to Japanese. The region lacks any national cuisine worth celebrating. (The Economist, 30.01) HARIDUS ON PRIORITEET EDUCATION IS A PRIORITY Balti riikide haridussüsteemi muutused on kiiremad, kui me ette suudame kujutada. Kui Briti süsteem on rangelt tsentraliseeritud, siis endistes nõukogude satelliitriikides on haridusinstitutsioonidel üsna suur vabadus. Tallinna Tehnikakõrgkooli populaarsemate erialade transport, logistika ja autoparandus tudengitel pole edaspidi raskusi töö leidmisega. Kooli sooviks on palgata rohkem ingliskeelseid lektoreid. (The Guardian, 20.07) Uued liitujad rikastavad ELi kultuuriliselt ja lingvistiliselt. (NRC Handelsblad, 4.06) The German rule left two things behind: mansions and words. Those words are mainly Low- or North-German, so that the amateur-philologist can frequently observe Dutch signals in the Estonian dark, "kelder" for instance, or "kroes", "hof", like glow-worms in the night. They stayed behind in the language like a sediment of the Hanze (being the European Union avant la lettre) and the Germans who ruled Estonia until the late 16th century. (NRC Handelsblad, 4.06) After being more or less discarded during the Soviet era, the Seto culture and language has been revived in recent years. The dialect itself differs from written Estonian as much as the latter does from Finnish, and may even be easier to comprehend for a Finn than the average Estonian. Like the Estonian National Awakening during , known as the Singing Revolution, the Setomaa region is now experiencing a similar trend that is acknowledging that they are in possession of something unique and valuable. A Seto paper is published regularly, a children s textbook is in print, the Seto dialect and Seto songs are being taught at schools. (TS, 7.09) Since the restoration of independence, Estonia has doubled its investments into science and is planning a similar increase by The 1.5% of the GDP that goes to science is easily at the EU average. Tartu aims to become a stellar role model for the science world. Its 400-year old university already is. During the Soviet era, no university was allowed to be older than the Lomonosov University in Moscow. The University of Tartu s age was therefore cut to 150 years. Estonia cannot compete globally in all science fields, but it competes well in information technology, physics and biotechnology, not to mention Estonian culture and history. (SZ, 2.05) 95

2004 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR Jaak Aaviksoo seeks to put Tartu, Estonia s second largest city, back on the world map of science. "We definitely want to excel in some fields," notes Aaviksoo. He means computer technology, genetic research, physics, neurology basically all the modern sciences. Considering Estonia s trouble with science funding, where does this optimism originate? Aaviksoo thinks it could be founded on Estonia s high-tech development and business culture. (FAZ, 28.04) THEATRE AND CINEMA Toomas Edur and Age Oks are renowned for their interpretation of 19th-century classics. The Estonianborn couple were invited to London in 1990 after Ivan Nagy (then director of the English National Ballet) saw their winning performance at the International Ballet Competition held in Mississippi. (The Guardian, 7.06) AGE OKS JA TOOMAS EDUR - KLASSIKALISE BALLETI ASJATUNDJAD AGE OKS AND TOOMAS EDUR - CLASSICAL BALLET VIRTUOSOS Nõukogude ajal mitte eriti hinnatud setu kultuur ja keel on viimastel aastatel taasleitud. 1,5% SKTst teadusele on täiesti ELi keskmine näitaja. (SZ, 2.05) Jaak Aaviksoo tahab Eesti suuruselt teise linna Tartu maailma teaduskaardile tagasi tuua. "Me tahame teatud aladel kindlasti esireas olla,"märgib Aaviksoo. Ta peab silmas infotehnoloogiat, geeniuuringuid, füüsikat, neuroloogiat, põhimõtteliselt kõiki moodsaid teadusharusid. Arvestades teaduse Meet Eve Mutso, "Miss April": young, pretty, talented and the new face of the modern dance Scottish Ballet poster campaign. For Mutso, 24, Dancer of the Month on the company s website, the new job was a breath of fresh air after the purely classical repertoire in her native Estonia Sleeping Beauty, Swan Lake, Romeo & Juliet. (The Times, 13.09) In Estonia, a nation of 1.3 million, one million theatre tickets were sold last year. Tallinn City Theatre is the most popular. It is not easy for any producer to make it to this theatre. One can only imagine Mart Koldits s delight when the Director of the City Theatre made him such a proposal. With youthful idealism, Koldits started out with one of the hardest works, staging "Chapayev and Pustota" by Viktor Pelevin. (Courrier International, ) The 8th Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (PÖFF) is the largest ever, comprising of a number of different competitive programmes. The children s and youth films festival is dedicated to Dutch director Theo van Gogh. PÖFF also includes a Baltic Event, where films from the Baltic countries are presented to movie producers. At major film festivals, films from the Baltics tend to get lost among all the others, while PÖFF is a chance for them to seek international markets, says the festival s Chief Organizer Tiina Lokk. (TS, 26.11) Estonian animated films, often said to be the best in the world (commanding budgets equal to full-length movies) are being screened at the Warsaw Centre for Contemporary Art. Estonia has been investing in this branch of cinematography, as all of its animated films have succeeded at international festivals. The "Joonisfilm" cartoon production studio, founded in 1970s, is a "talent factory". It has, among others, produced the cult film "Night of the Carrots" by Priit Pärn. Also on screen in Poland is Pärn s newest film "Karl and Marilyn". (Rzeczpospolita, 30.09) 96

2004 KULTUUR & SPORT CULTURE AND SPORTS rahastamise probleeme Eestis, millel põhineb selline optimism? Aaviksoo arvates on eelduseks Eesti kõrgtehnoloogiline areng ja ärikultuur. (FAZ, 28.04) TEATER JA KINO Toomas Edur ja Age Oks on 19. sajandi klassikalise balleti asjatundjad. Eestist pärit paar on elanud alates aastast Londonis, kuhu Inglise Rahvusballeti tollane direktor Ivan Nagy nad pärast Mississippis toimunud rahvusvahelise balletikonkursi võitu kutsus. (The Guardian, 7.06) Saage tuttavaks Šoti Rahvusballeti modernse uuslavastuse "Miss April" nimiosalisega noor, ilus ja andekas eestlanna Eve Mutso. Mutso valiti kuu tantsijaks, tema jaoks on praegune repertuaar justkui sõõm värsket õhku, sest eelnevalt tantsis 24-aastane baleriin Eesti rahvusooperis klassikalistes lavastustes "Uinuv kaunitar", "Luikede järv", "Romeo ja Julia". (The Times, 13.09) Eestis, 1,3 miljoni elanikuga riigis, müüdi möödunud aastal miljon teatripiletit. Tallinna Linnateater on eriti populaarne. (Courrier International, ) Kaheksandat korda Tallinnas korraldatav Pimedate Ööde Filmifestival (PÖFF) on laiahaardelisem kui kunagi varem, sisaldades palju erinevaid võistlusprogramme. Laste- ja noortefilmide festival on pühendatud hollandi režissöörile Theo van Goghile. PÖFFi raames korraldatakse Baltic Event, kus Balti riikide filme esitletakse Euroopa filmitootjatele. Suurtel filmifestivalidel kaovad Baltimaade filmid teiste hulgas lihtsalt ära, siin aga saame neile otsida rahvusvahelist turgu, ütles festivali peakorraldaja Tiina Lokk. (TS, 26.11) Varssavi Kaasaegse Kunsti Keskuse kinos näidatakse eesti animafilme, mida peetakse maailma parimaiks (nende eelarve on sama, mis täispikkadel mängufilmidel). Eesti investeerib sellesse kinematograafiaharusse, kuna kõiki sealseid animafilme saadab rahvusvahelistel festivalidel edu. The Estonians have won a medal for every citizens. They won three medals in Athens. (The Washington Post, 27.08) Estonia, like Scotland, will not be going to Portugal this summer after they finished fourth in their Euro 2004 qualifying group. Instead, coach Arno Pijpers has been left with the task of trying to prepare his side for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, where Estonia, during the past decade, has been able to win against only Andorra, the Faroe Islands, Lithuania and Belarus. 13 2004 PILK PEEGLISSE GLANCE AT THE MIRROR EESTLASED SUMORAHVAS? ESTONIANS A PEOPLE OF SUMO WRESTLERS? SPORT Analüüsist olümpiamedalite arvu ja riikide sportliku edukuse kohta selgub, et enim medaleid võitnud USAl tasub siiski eeskuju võtta Bahamast ja Eestist aasta Pekingi olümpiaks valmistumist peaksid ameeriklased alustama hoopis kehalise kasvatuse õpetaja palkamisega Eestist. "Mida nad spordis üldse saavutanud on," mõtlete nüüd. Aga eestlastel on tänavustelt olümpiamängudelt kolm medalit üks medal kodaniku kohta! (The Washington Post, 27.08) Jäädes sarnaselt Šotimaaga oma alagrupi neljandaks, ei pääse Eesti rahvusmeeskond sel suvel jalgpalli EMile Portugalis. Selle asemel on treener Arno Pijpersi ülesanne valmistada meeskond ette eelseisvaks Maailma Karikavõistluste kvalifikatsiooniturniiriks, kus Eesti on 10 aasta kestel võitnud vaid Andorrat, Fääri saari, Leedut ja Valgevenet. Pijpersil oli aastal tööle asudes valida üksnes 6500 registreeritud jalgpalluri seast. Meeskonna suurim staar on kahtlemata väravavaht Mart Poom, kel esiliiga kogemus Derbyst ja Sunderlandist. (Kyodo News, 22.04) To date, Markko Märtin has been able to achieve all the goals that he has set. This year he aimed for the WRC gold. "I am of a type that does not require much time to reach the top," Märtin says. The secret to success lies in experience, says Märtin, 28, now heading towards his fourth World Championship year. Märtin took out a loan to pay for his first car, but the risk proved worthwhile he got attention and is now netting laurels for Ford. (Dagbladet, 21.01) Estonian Markko Märtin drove his Ford to victory at the penultimate World Championship stage, outracing Marcus Grönholm from Finland and Carlos Sainz from Spain. Fifteen days after his first asphalt rally triumph in Corsica, Märtin repeated the feat in Catalonia. In all, the Estonian has five stage wins during his career. (Kyodo News, 22.04) Markko Märtin on siiani seatud eesmärgid ka saavutanud. Sel hooajal tahtis ta saada MM-kulda. "Ma olen seda tüüpi, et mul kulub tippu jõudmiseks suhteliselt vähe aega," teatab Märtin. Edu saladuseks peab 28-aastane Märtin kogemust, hetkel on tal juba seljataga kolm aastat sõitu Maailma Karikasarjas. (La Libre, 5.07) JALGRATTUR JAAN KIRSIPUU CYCLIST JAAN KIRSIPUU Rally, he held off attacks from all quarters, including a sustained onslaught from Sebastien Loeb, the newly crowned world champion and Francois Duval, his Ford teammate. These moves failed when competitors damaged their cars on the unforgiving edges of the Catalan mountain roads. (The Times, 1.11) Estonia s Markko Märtin, driving a Ford, struggled with poor pace notes and suspension problems. Markko had to settle for third place in the race on Japan s northernmost island of Hokkaido. (Japan Times, 6.09) When awarding the best sprinters, Kirsipuu is a name less common than Boonen, Petacchi or McEwan. Even less expected was his victory at this year s Tour de France, where he admitted to have arrived with the question "What am I doing here?" in mind. A surprise win clearly an understatement, considering the headwind and light slopes at the Charleroi arrival. The strong Estonian asserted his power, taking the 116th victory of his professional career. (La Libre, 5.07) 99
