2 1 DESCRIPTION The Splice Module Accessory Kit is used to designate and protect pigtails prior to installation in a splice drawer. One kit accommodates up to 96 pigtails and includes the following: 8 braided fiberglass sleeves and 8 plastic sleeves 8 splice drawer designation labels 1 sheet of pigtail numbers 1 kit instruction sheet 2 INSTALLATION Pigtails are individual lengths of fiber that have a fiber optic connector at one end. When pigtails are installed, each pigtail connector is mated to a bulkhead adapter or bulkhead receptacle at the rear of a connector module. From the connector module, each pigtail fiber is routed to either a standard splice module or a combination splice module for splicing to an OSP fiber. To utilize the maximum splice capacity of the splice modules, pigtails are installed in groups of 12. Each group of 12 pigtails is protected by a fiberglass braided sleeve. The outside diameter of each pigtail should not exceed 900 microns; otherwise, fewer than 12 pigtails will fit in the braided sleeve. Pigtails may be routed to the rear of the splice modules from either the left or right side of the frame. However, when zoning is used, pigtails should be routed on the same side of the frame as the OSP cables. Entry holes are provided at the rear of each splice module for routing the pigtails into the splice drawers. Use the following procedure to install pigtails: 1. Determine the length of fiber required for routing each pigtail between the connector and the rear of the splice module. Refer to Figure 1 for an example of how the fanning triangles are used for routing pigtails. If necessary, attempt a trial routing with a spare length of fiber to determine the exact length required. 2. Add 90 inches (2.3 meters) to the length determined in step 1 to allow for the splicing service loop required in the splice module. 3. Select 12 pigtails for installation in the splice module based on the length required for routing and splicing as determined in steps 1 and Apply designation tags to each pigtail one near the connector and the other near the splice end for identification purposes. The connector numbers for each pigtail are indicated on the rear of the connector module. 5. Carefully feed 12 pigtails into one of the braided fiberglass sleeves provided with the kit. Continue feeding pigtails into the sleeve until all the pigtails emerge from the opposite end, as shown in Figure Mate each pigtail connector with the appropriate bulkhead adapter or bulkhead receptacle at the rear of the connector module. Follow recommendations of connector manufacturer concerning use of dust caps, connector tightening procedures, and connector cleaning procedures. Page 2

Routing Pigtails to Splice Module 7. Adjust braided sleeve to extend just beyond the radius limiter at the rear of the connector module. 8. Use fanning triangles at the rear of the frame to route pigtails to the splice module. Follow same routing used by existing pigtails. 9. Select the splice drawer that will be used for splicing. Insert end of braided sleeve (with pigtails inside) into the rear entry hole of the selected splice drawer. 11. With splice drawer closed, carefully feed pigtails into drawer from rear of module. 12. Open splice drawer and pull pigtails through until excess slack is removed. 13. Insert the small plastic sleeve onto the end of the braided sleeve as shown in Figure 3. The plastic sleeve prevents the fibers from being pinched when the pigtails are secured to the splice tray. 14. Pull drawer fully open and install the pigtails inside the splice drawer as shown in Figure 4. Route pigtails around take-up spool on left side of drawer, then coil pigtails around radius limiters in the center of the drawer. Verify that braided sleeve does not get snagged on the bracket directly above the take-up spool. Take up all excess slack when coiling the pigtails. 15. Install next group of 12 pigtails in the splice drawer using the same procedure. 16. Close splice drawer allowing slack to be taken up within drawer. Verify that pigtails do not kink or bind as drawer is closed. 17. Repeat procedure for each splice drawer used. 18. Refer to the Fiber Distribution Frame User Manual for basic splicing guidelines.
