2 Big Idea Card Big Ideas of the Lesson 6, Unit 1 One important pattern of migration is urbanization, or the movement of people from rural to urban areas. The pace of urbanization on Earth has accelerated over time. At the present time over half of the world s population lives in urban areas. Urbanization offers the opportunity to deliver important services like water, electricity, education, and health care in more efficient ways. Urbanization also comes with problems such as air pollution, traffic congestion, slums, poverty, and lack of green space. Michigan Citizenship Collaborative Curriculum Page 2 of 17
