2 Cape Girardeau County officials discuss replacing juvenile detention center Friday, February 12, 2010 By Brian Blackwell ~ Southeast Missourian Cape Girardeau County officials agree the aging juvenile detention facility needs to be replaced but are unsure about the solution. The Cape Girardeau County Juvenile Detention Center at 325 Merriwether St. is nearly 40 years old and the oldest center of its kind in the state. The center has repeatedly been cited by juvenile court officials as inadequate for housing youth offenders. On Thursday, county commissioners discussed the idea of whether the facility should be rebuilt or moved to another location.
3 Local law enforcement says impact from detention center closing would be 'huge Friday, April 15, 2011 By Scott Moyers ~ Southeast Missourian The Cape Girardeau County Juvenile Center is one of six centers across the state of Missouri that may be closing its doors for budgetary reasons. (Laura Simon) A plan to close the Cape Girardeau County Juvenile Detention Center has raised serious concerns for the area's top law enforcement officials, who said Thursday it would have a significant impact on their departments as well as the troubled teens the center serves. The state's circuit court budget committee announced a proposal this week that calls for pulling payroll funding by Jan. 1 for six of Missouri juvenile detention centers, including the one in Cape Girardeau, which has 13 employees. The committee made its cost-cutting recommendation based on several factors -- the facility's age, average daily population and proximity to other detention centers.

5 Cape officials discuss Missouri Supreme Court juvenile detention ruling Thursday, December 15, 2011 By Patrick T. Sullivan ~ Southeast Missourian Local leaders discussed issues pertaining to a new Missouri Supreme Court ruling that changes custody rights for underage offenders Wednesday during the first of several meetings. In April, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled that as of Jan. 1, juveniles should not be held in secure detention unless they present a risk to public safety or may fail to appear in court for hearings. To help assess what measures should be taken, the court designed a checklist that evaluates whether a juvenile should be detained. State and local officials used Wednesday's meeting at the Cape Girardeau Career and Technology Center to lay out the new guidelines and examine what programs could be instituted for Cape Girardeau County juveniles in the criminal justice system. School and law enforcement officials were on hand, as well as representatives from Big Brothers Big Sisters. Cape Girardeau presents an interesting situation under the new ruling because its juvenile detention center closed in October, Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative state coordinator Bob Perry said. "This gives us an opportunity to look at the current system and see what it could be like in the future," Perry said.

16 Future Project Cape County looks into consolidated juvenile office Monday, November 18, 2013 By Erin Ragan ~ Southeast Missourian Local juvenile authorities working under three roofs could come together under one, as the Cape Girardeau County Commission is taking steps to build a new office for the 32nd Judicial District Juvenile Assessment Center. About 20 employees in the juvenile division that serves Bollinger, Cape Girardeau and Perry counties are housed in two spaces for offices -- in the annex of the Common Pleas Courthouse and the former juvenile detention center on Merriwether Street in Cape Girardeau. The juvenile officers use a third location, the Echo Center on Armstrong Drive, for some programs. Because more staff are expected to be needed in the next one to five years based on past growth, according to the commission, more space is needed.
