1 COURSE SYLLABUS WOMEN AND LAW: A RUSSIAN FOCUS Professor: Office: Lecture room: Lectures: COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is an elective one for Master students. Its purpose is to form the knowledge on women s legal status in the actual gender order. From a methodological perspective, the course contains several objectives: 1. The study of History of legal status of women in Russia, Europe and the USA in the Modern Period. 2. The study of the actual women s legal status in Russia, Europe and the USA. 3. Skills acquisition of the comparative analysis of legal systems using the case of legal status of women 4. Skills consolidation of the work with legal and regulatory texts The course is both interdisciplinary and comparative. The purpose of the course is to expose students to the complex issues - social, political, economic and legal that characterize women s rights in the world with focus on the problems specific to Russia. The course proposes training by seminars, consisting of introductory lectures on every studying issue, case studies and plenary sessions, including the research work with legal and regulatory texts. Further, students will be asked to conduct research on a women s rights topic of their choice (including analysis of legal and regulatory texts and gender analysis) and to present their findings to class participants. The course will provide students with an introduction to and assistance in utilizing the web and literature as tools for conducting research on women s rights. COURSE ASSESSMENT 10% Class Attendance (it is required to attend not less than 90% of the class hours; if not, it is necessary to take test on the missing topics) 20% Required Literature Reading, Class Discussion and In Class Writing Assignments. Students are expected to have read and thought about the assigned readings in advance of each class session. The Class Participation includes coming to class, participating in the discussion, and importantly turning in Reading and
2 Writing Assignments. The Class Work also proposes the analysis of the National and International Legal and Regulatory Texts. 30% Research Paper (10pp.) on the analysis of the Russian legal and regulatory texts for performing a gender analysis of legislation (teamwork of 2-3 students). This course aims to develop writing, research and presentation skills. 40% Final test: -It is required to meet the minimum passing score of 48% -The test consists of two parts. The first one is theoretical. It represents an essay on the issue discussed in the class. The second one is a presentation of the Research results by means of Power Point Presentation and the oral statement. COURSE SCHEDULE Lesson1.
