1 Residency Permit for Austria: Overview Dear student, Applying for a residency permit is a critical part of your path to success at WVPU. In order to increase your chances of a timely approval, please contact Student Services as soon as possible at student.services@webster.ac.at to allow us to review all materials before you submit your application to the relevant Austrian authorities to avoid delays in the process. However, please be aware that Webster Vienna Private University is not able to give legal immigration advice and the outcome of residency permit applications is the decision of the Austrian authorities alone. Depending on your nationality, different regulations apply. The Austrian laws differentiate between citizens of the European Union (EU) and European Economic Area (EEA), and citizens of all other states (third-country nationals). Third-country nationals require an entry visa and/or a residence permit to study in Austria. Studying for more than 6 months For students who plan to spend more than six months in Austria (i.e. to pursue a degree program), third-country nationals need a Residency Permit Student. It is important to know whether or not you need an entry visa to enter Austria, because the procedure to follow for an initial application for a residence permit depends on this. You can find out whether or not you need an entry visa in the list below. If you do not need an entry visa to enter Austria: The initial application for an Austrian residence permit can only be submitted in person. You can apply immediately after entering Austria with the immigration authorities. You could also apply at the embassy or consulate in your home country, though this may take longer. If you apply in Austria and you not be granted a residence permit within the entry visa-free time period (normally 90 days), you must exit the Schengen area and wait for approval abroad. This means you must apply for the permit as soon as possible after entering Austria, and prepare your documents beforehand. If you do need an entry visa to enter Austria: The initial application for an Austrian residence permit can only be submitted in person at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country. The decision must be awaited abroad. Therefore, you should submit your application at least three months prior to your planned entry into Austria. Remember that you need to obtain the documents in your home country and to have them translated and certified, which can take time. After a residence permit has been granted, you will be notified by Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country. After this, you have three months time to apply for a type D visa to enter Austria. The residence permit must be picked up in Austria six months after notification by the

2 representation authority at the latest, and under all circumstances within the period of validity of the entry visa. Normally, the Residence Permit Student is issued for 12 months. Note: Everyone living in Austria must register their place of residence within three days of arrival. You must do this with the municipal district office (Magistratisches Bezirksamt). If you live in our Am Augarten residence, we will help you with this. When you move out again, you need to notify the same registration office of your departure within three days. Quick Summary - Once you re accepted to WVPU, contact student.services@webster.ac.at for support. - If you can enter Austria without a visa, gather all your documents ahead of time and bring them with you if you want to apply in Austria. Apply as soon as possible after you start at Webster. - If you need a visa to enter Austria, apply for the residency permit at the Austrian embassy or consulate in your home country. Apply minimum three months before you want to come to Austria, preferably earlier. You ll get a visa to enter Austria, then pick up your residency permit once you are here (which may require further documents).

3 Check list Residence Permit Student : Fully completed and signed application form (included in this package, also available at your embassy/consulate or online at Copy of a valid travel document (e.g. passport). Birth certificate (with Apostille, a specialized certificate from the authority which issued the document, to be attached to the original notarized document). Current passport photo complying with the ICAO criteria (color, size of 3.5 x 4.5 cm). The full photo requirements are explained at: Photograph_Guidelines.pdf Police clearance certificate not older than 3 months (with Apostille). Webster Vienna acceptance letter (and Certificate of Enrollment if you apply in Austria. This document is issued by the university on the first day of class). Proof of sufficient financial means of subsistence for the duration of the stay: - Proof of funds: a bank account statement in your name in Austria or in your home country to which access from Austria is possible, the proven purchase of travelers cheques, or a declaration of liability signed by a person living in Austria. For the amount of funds, see the chart below. - Proof of the source of funds (e.g. parents bank statement and proof of transfer to student s account, parents salary documentation). 4 Proof of a legal claim to accommodation, such as a rental contract (e.g. from the Webster Residence am Augarten) or private accommodation agreement ("Wohnrechtsvereinbarung"). Proof of health insurance (e.g. travel insurance) that must be valid from the moment of entering Austria until you are eligible to apply for student health insurance with the Austrian state health insurance provider (Gebietskrankenkasse). The fee for the first residence permit is 120 euros (80 euros upon application with the Austrian representation or immigration authority, the residual amount when the residence permit is issued). Further fees may apply. All required documents must be provided as originals and as copies usually certified copies of foreign documents must be provided. Foreign-language documents must be accompanied by a German translation prepared by a state-certified translator. Exemption from entry visa requirements (Visumfreiheit) If you are a holder of a residence permit of another Schengen Member State or a national of one of the following countries you do not need to apply for an entry visa to enter and reside in Austria for up to the maximum period stated below. If you are allowed to enter Austria without an entry visa you may apply for a residence permit during your permitted entry visa-free stay in Austria. This should be done as soon as possible after arrival. NB: The application, however, does not permit you to stay for longer than your entry visa-free stay. Attention: The entry visa-free stay is related to all Schengen countries, i.e. days you spend in other Schengen countries are included in the 90 days entry visa free stay!
