1 Facts and Figures: Migra;on in the East African Community In mid-2015, there were 217,360 refugees and 24,157 asylum seekers origina?ng from Burundi, and 78,948 IDPs. UNHCR announced that the number of Burundian refugees surpassed 250,000 in March RemiEance inflow: USD $49 million es?mated for 2015, steady since % of GDP in RemiEance oumlow: $7 million in 2013, up from $5 million in Data sources: UN DESA 2016, World Bank 2016, UNHCR 2016.! Average weekly arrivals: 1,000+ in Tanzania, 500+ in Uganda, 230+ in Rwanda and 200+ in DRC. According to UNHCR, Burundi hosted 54,126 refugees in mid-2015, nearly all of whom were from DRC, and 2,733 asylum seekers. 1

For the third year in a row, Kakuma received record numbers of refugees from South Sudan. By 2016, refugees and asylum seekers from Somalia were expected to represent nearly 70% of people of concern, followed by South Sudanese (20%) and Ethiopians (4%). There were 7,474 refugees and 3,278 asylum seekers from Kenya. UNHCR did not recognize any IDPs. 2

4 Facts and Figures: Migra;on in the East African Community In mid-2015, there were over 1.6 million South Sudanese internally displaced by the conflict that erupted in Juba in The overwhelming majority live in remote and oden inaccessible loca?ons. There were at least 744,102 refugees and 3,885 asylum seekers who originated from South Sudan. There were 265,887 refugees and 632 asylum seekers residing in South Sudan. Most were from DRC and Burundi. UNHCR announced in March 2016 that 131,834 refugees from Burundi came to Tanzania in the past year, with more than 1,000 arriving weekly. There were 236 refugees and 116 asylum seekers from Botswana. The interna;onal migrant stock consists mainly of persons coming from South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, India and UK. Botswana is a source, transit, and des;na;on country for irregular migra?on and trafficking especially women and children subjected to sex trafficking and forced labor.

13 Informa;on Sources Sources for up-to-date migra?on sta?s?cs include but are not limited to the following: The United Na?ons Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA), Popula?on Division, maintains a migra?on database, with informa?on on total interna?onal migrant stock, sta?s?cs by age and sex, sta?s?cs by des?na?on and origin countries, etc. It was most recently updated with 2015 data; the previous update was in The Office of the United Na?ons High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has country and regional pages with informa?on on refugees, IDPs, stateless persons, etc., updated several ;mes per year. It produces other relevant publica?ons periodically. The World Bank updates remifance data annually. IOM produces World Migra?on Reports and other publica?ons; ILO and other agencies (e.g. UNODC, U.S. State Department) publish relevant data periodically as well. Addi?onal na?onal data can be found in census and other survey reports; in some cases, informa?on might be disaggregated by district/county/etc. Research: Academic and grey literature can provide more local-level informa?on regarding par?cular migrant groups, e.g. a 2013 IOM / Makerere University study es?mated the number of fisherfolk in Uganda. 13
