2 NATIONALISM: AN ERA OF GOOD FEELINGS What is NATIONALISM? First, let s define NATION. A large group of people united by common descent, history, culture, or language, living in a particular area. NATIONALISM is loyalty or devotion to your nation. Why was nationalism on the rise at this time in U.S. history? REASONS: Success in War of 1812 Nationalist economics: Henry Clay s American System Boost in federal power from Judiciary American art and literature flourish

3 SECTIONALISM What is SECTIONALISM? First, let s define REGION. Part of a country or the world having definable characteristics but not always fixed boundaries SECTIONALISM: Exaggerated devotion or allegiance to the interests of a region (the North vs. the South). Some REASONS: Differing economies: Industrial (North) vs. Agricultural (South) Issues over slavery Differences in population growth (Immigration ) Development of cities in the North

4 Adams-Onis Treaty Settled all border disputes between the USA and Spain Florida and Western lands were purchased for $5 million

6 Monroe Doctrine (1823) James Monroe became President after Madison what position did he hold in Madison s cabinet? Most of the work on the Monroe Doctrine was done by J.Q. Adams, Sec. Of State Foreign policy Told Europe to stay out of the Western Hemisphere and we would stay out of European affairs

8 MONROE DOCTRINE ACTIVITY Read the 3 parts oft the Doctrine For each scenario Write whether it is TRUE or FALSE Write which number it goes with (part 1, 2, or 3) Explain why it is true or false

9 Panic of 1819 Economic expansion from the War of 1812 ended Banks failed, farmers lost land, etc. Low prices led to less manufacturing More foreign competition for goods

Protective tariffs 2. Building new roads & canals to link the states (Atlantic & Midwest) 3. Establish Second Bank of the U.S.

11 (1) Protective Tariff Tax on foreign goods: Protects American goods Increased tariffs Effects: Hurt the South; rely on trade with Britain Caused sectionalism

12 (2) Roads & Canals Helped Baltimore replace NY as a key east coast port Canals also built; mainly in the north; Expensive $$$ How do we pay for roads today?

13 (2) Continued The Erie Canal Connected the West and NY city 363 miles Finished in 1825 Lowers shipping costs greatly

15 (3) 2 nd National Bank Need a new National Currency The original bank s charter ran out and needed to be renewed 2 nd Bank of the U.S. created

You will work with the row next to you (total of 5 groups) You will be given a folder with a variety of resources in it It is your job as a group to review those resources & analyze them: (1) Photographs Photo Analysis Sheet INCLUDE ALL 3 PHOTOS ON THIS SHEET! 18 ONCE YOU ARE DONE WITH THOSE RESOURCES You will complete the Positives/Negatives Chart to answer the Essential Question EQ: Which was a better or more significant addition to Clay s Plan, the Canal or the road? Once you are done with all of your questions and your chart, you will do one of these options to answer the Essential Question: Option 1 Essay Option 2 Pamphlet (Fill out AT LEAST 4 of the 6 panels!!!)
