2 Our Mission At the American Cancer Society, we re working to create a world with more birthdays where cancer never steals another year from anyone s life. We combine our never-ending passion with the wisdom of nearly a century of experience to make this vision a reality, and we get results. Together with our millions of supporters, we save lives by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back against a disease that has taken far too much from too many. Virtually every major cancer breakthrough in the past 60 years can be traced to the American Cancer Society, and 46 researchers funded early in their career have gone on to win the Nobel Prize. Thanks in part to this work, nearly 14 million cancer survivors in America, will celebrate a birthday this year.

3 Your Dollars at Work 2,700 local individuals persons with a cancer diagnosis, their family members and friends looked to your American Cancer Society for information about diagnosis, treatment, support, financial assistance or other services available during Fiscal Year Throughout Fiscal year 2012, the Northwest New Jersey Region was able to provide the following services: 1,636 rides given to cancer patients traveling to and from their treatment appointments. 160 free wigs given to women. 327 ladies attended a Look Good Feel Better session to address the cosmetic effects of treatment. They each received a free make-up and skin care kit valued at $ Reach to Recovery conversations took place between a breast cancer survivor and a newly diagnosed patient. Specially trained volunteers, who are breast cancer survivors, give patients and family members an opportunity to express feelings, talk about fears and concerns, and ask questions of someone who is knowledgeable and level-headed. They offer understanding, support, and hope when it s needed the most. 1,200 constituents were paired up with a Patient Navigator, who provided them with specific information pertaining to their unique diagnosis. Our Patient Navigators are in 4 treatment locations providing one-on-one support and information to patients and loved ones. Additionally, we are partnering with 8 facilities to systematically refer newly diagnosed patients to us. $4.3 million is funding 10 research grants in New Jersey. The American Cancer Society is the largest not-for-profit funder of cancer research in the U.S., second only to the Federal Government. The American Cancer Society knows that the fight against cancer cannot be tackled alone. 4 The Starry Night Gala The American Cancer Society s Starry Night Gala is a powerful and inspiring event that unites communities to celebrate people who have battled cancer, educate people about the steps they need to take to reduce their risk of getting cancer cancer awareness and prevention -- or find it early when it s most treatable, and raise money to make a difference in the following ways: Investing in research to find, prevent, treat, and cure the disease Providing free information and services to help people facing cancer today when and where they need it including transportation, lodging, wigs, support programs, and financial assistance Ensuring the voices of patients, survivors and caregivers are heard in support of laws and policies that save lives from cancer The Starry Night Gala s message is simple; unite Morris, Somerset, Hunterdon, Warren, and Sussex Counties in the fight against cancer, and create a world with more birthdays. It is through the efforts of our dedicated volunteer committee that all of this has been possible. With a growth rate of 28% last year alone, we anticipate even greater development in the years to come.
