Christmas For Kids, Wednesday, December 2 Just a Few Slots Left Christmas for Kids 30th year Volunteer Registration Online Greg Burnett, Christmas for Kids Foundation President and Royal Rosarian has held out 50 shop times exclusively for Royal Rosarians during the 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. shop times on Wednesday, December 2. Sign up at or click below for one of those time slots and you will be with the largest group of Rosarians. Other times are available if those times do not work for your schedule. Please list "Royal Rosarians" under "Company Name" when registering. Please register each shopper regardless if you plan to shop as a team. Cue up together and you will form as a team. There will be a new check-in layout this year so all volunteers can wait inside the warmer store. Since this is the 30th anniversary for this event, there will be a lot of media attention and it is planned for the 9:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. time slots. White coats will look good. Unfilled Royal Rosarian times will be released to the public on November 2, so please get your spot reserved early. After November 2 you can still sign up but the Rosarian time slots of 9:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. will not be guaranteed. image: Bob and Sandy Simmons share their shopping expertise with a young and appreciative student at a past Christmas for Kids event. In addition, their organizational expertise coordinated this event for the Royal Rosarians for many years. click here to reserve your volunteer time
2015 Poinsettia Sales Beginning in 2005 the Royal Royal Rosarians have participated in the Christmas for Kids program as volunteer "shoppers" and through our charitable arm we've contributed $39,599 to the program.
Your purchase of holiday poinsettias helps the Royal Rosarian Foundation make a financial contribution to this worthy cause. We have set a goal to contribute $5,000 this year and with your help we can surely meet or exceed this figure. The quality of these poinsettia plants is superb and customers reorder year after year because they are a great value. Consider that a plant can be a great holiday gift for your children, friends and neighbors. Plants will be available for pick-up at 900 SE Sandy by December 5th or you can receive "free delivery" with a minimum purchase of $ Please call Phil Guzie to get your poinsettias ordered. He can be reached at or at pguzie@precisionimages.com. Orders must be complete by November 24. Pruning Party at the Washington Park Rose Garden Wednesday, November 18 On Wednesday, November 18th, let's assist Rose Garden Curator Sir Knight Harry Landers put the rose garden to bed for the winter! Royal Rosarians are asked to join in the effort to "wind prune" the rose bushes at Washington Park International Rose Test Garden. The entire 4.5 acre garden shuts down its blooming season by pruning all the bushes to waist height. There is no rose expertise necessary! Pruners and loppers will be provided. The work begins at first light and concludes around 2pm. Dress for the weather with long pants and garden gloves. Coffee, treats, and lunch will be served. Parking fee waivers will be available. Contact Kimberly Bown with any questions. It is the effort in the Fall that allows this unique and treasured view of the Washington Park Rose Garden in the Spring. Please join in this effort.

Rosarians Meet & Greet Al Roker A last minute opportunity to do a VIP greeting on Sunday resulted in an interesting morning/afternoon in Portland's Lan Su Chinese Garden. Al Roker from NBC's Today Show was scheduled to do a live weather broadcast as part of his Rokerthon project. His goal is to do a live weather forecast in all states within a one week time frame and, in the process, raise money to assist families in need of food.
As Rosarians waited within the garden we had an opportunity to visit with visitors from many parts of the country. Some people hoped to see Al and others were just on a lucky day of visiting the beautiful garden and having a chance to meet Al and see his broadcast, too. As time passed and Rosarians learned that Roker would be later than anticipated, the Rosarians enjoyed a Chinese lunch together. Al did arrive early afternoon and was very personable, chatted with the crowd as he gave autographs and shared news about the objectives of the Rokerthron. After he and Rod Hill from KGW presented the weather forecast for Oregon for the day, he and his crew were on their way to their next city. November Membership Meeting Last week's membership meeting was well attended and was run with efficiency and purpose. Spouses and Life Members were honored for all that they do for the organization. This year there were no new Life Members Veterans' Day Parade This year's Ross Hollywood Veterans' Day Parade was well attended by Royal Rosarians in spite of intermittent showers. The sun was out as the parade started but it quickly disappeared, giving way to clouds and light rain. The sun reappeared as the parade ended and a short ceremony honoring all veterans was conducted at the finish line. This photo shows the Royal Rosarians lined up to take part in that ceremony.
Memorial for Duke Don Henderson Duke Robert Bishop shared one of his favorite memories of Duke Don Henderson at Don's memorial service on November 1 at Hayden's Grill in Tualatin. About 60 Royal Rosarians, along with numerous spouses and friends paid their respects. The ceremony was officiated by Duke Bob Woody. A view from the back row shows many Royal Rosarians as they perform their traditional Rose Ceremony at the memorial service for Duke Don Henderson who passed away on October 9. Each Rosarian places a single rose in a vase as a tribute to their friend and his family. Here is one of his favorite quotes: "Outside of a dog, a book is man's best friend...inside a dog it's too dark to read." -- Groucho Marx (The late Jim Nielson, Prime Minister in 1979, was famous for his "truisms" which he happily shared in each issue of the Royal Update from its launch in 2005 until his death in Jim was knighted under the rose Sutter's Gold, pictured. Truisms now are either from Jim's archives or are quotations Duke Peter thinks Jim would like. If you'd like to suggest a quotation please it to Peter.)
