Enclosed are descriptions for the Graciela Olivarez La Raza Award, Maclovio Barraza Award for Leadership, Ruben Salazar Award for Communications, and Roberto Clemente Award for Sports Excellence. The Awards will be presented at the Conference Awards Gala on Monday, July 25 in Orlando, FL. 2 NCLR Annual Conference Awards Summary GRACIELA OLIVAREZ LA RAZA AWARD Dr. Juliet V. Garcia The Graciela Olivarez La Raza Award, named in honor of Graciela Olivarez for her lifetime commitment to Hispanic women s rights, is presented to an individual or organization that has made the most significant contributions in promoting the interests of Hispanic Americans. Graciela Olivarez, who rightly earned the title Amazing Grace, led the 1972 campaign to require equal representation of men and women on the NCLR Board of Directors. She was also the first woman to graduate from Notre Dame Law School, and later became the highestranking Hispanic woman in President Carter s administration. The recipient of this award must have done work for the betterment of the Hispanic community which is national in scope as well as recent and relevant to contemporary Hispanic America Honorable Esteban E. Garcia MACLOVIO BARRAZA AWARD FOR LEADERSHIP Luis Garden Acosta The Maclovio Barraza Award for Leadership, named in honor of the NCLR Board of Directors' founding chairperson, recognizes an individual whose leadership has served as a source of streng th and support to the Hispanic community. Maclovio Barraza, a lifelong labor activist, helped organize the International Union of Mine, Mill, and Smelter Workers, and was part of its executive board until 1967 when it merged with the United Steelworkers Union. At the time of his death, he was leading major negotiations to improve the conditions of Hispanics working in the copper industry in Arizona. The recipient of this award must have worked for the betterment of the Hispanic community at the local level, and his or her contributions must be recent and relevant to contemporary Hispanic America Honorable Ricardo Manuel Urbina Everett Alvarez, Jr Donald E. 3 RUBEN SALAZAR AWARD FOR COMMUNICATIONS Mandalit Del Barco The Ruben Salazar Award for Communications, named in honor of the distinguished journalist who was killed on August 29, 1970, by a policeman s tear gas projectile while covering an antiwar march in East Los Angeles, annually recognizes an individual who has dedicated his or her life to promoting the accurate and positive portrayal of Hispanic historical, political, economic, and cultural contributions to American society. Salazar began a career in investigative reporting which took him from a position as a young reporter with the El Paso Herald-Post to the city room of the prestigious Los Angeles Times. Salazar covered the war in Vietnam, revolutionary tumult in Latin America, and day-to-day events in Mexico City. He was among the first Hispanics to become prominent and well-respected in journalism. Lozano, Jr Rossana Rosado Raquel "Rocsi" Diaz José Díaz-Balart Mandalit Del Barco ROBERTO CLEMENTE AWARD FOR SPORTS EXCELLENCE Cookie Rojas The Roberto Clemente Award for Sports Excellence, named in honor of the athlete considered by many to be the greatest outfielder in baseball, is presented to an individual or organization renowned in the world of sports, as well as committed to the advancement of Hispanic Americans. During his career, Clemente won four batting titles and was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the National League (1966) and the World Series (1971). He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in It was his charitable efforts that led to his tragic death; on New Year s Eve 1972, he was aboard a plane with relief supplies for the earthquake victims of Managua, Nicaragua, when the aircraft crashed at sea. The recipient of this award must be a sports professional who has found ways to positively portray Hispanic Americans and bring awareness and solutions to issues that affect contemporary Hispanic America Tommy Nuñez Henry J. 4 Instructions for Submission of Nomination Please read and fill out the enclosed Official Entry Form to nominate any individual or organization for consideration in one of the four awards described above. Make sure to read all instructions carefully. The recipients selected to receive an award must be present at the Awards Gala ceremony on Monday, July 25, in Orlando, FL. As the submitter of this nomination, it is your responsibility to inform the entrant of the submission and of the entrant s commitment to be present at the Awards Gala if selected. Entries should be no more than five pages, including the Official Entry Form and all accompanying documents. All pages beyond the five-page limit will be withheld from consideration. Individuals and/or groups internal or external to the NCLR Affiliate Network may submit an entry; however, a person or organization may not submit themselves for an award.
