3 Dear Friend of the Brady Campaign and Center to Prevent Gun Violence, During , the Brady Campaign and Center experienced some incredible triumphs and created exciting new momentum in the fight to prevent gun violence in America. We also suffered some terrible losses, most notably the deaths of trailblazing namesakes Jim and Sarah Brady. Jim and Sarah were personal friends and mentors to me. But they were also the leaders, the spirit, and the inspiration for this movement. Jim and Sarah leave behind a legacy of perseverance and impact matched by few Americans. Although they are sorely missed, the Brady organization and the entire gun violence prevention movement continues to be inspired by their spirit and dedication to fight harder every day. In fact, that inspiration set our movement up to reach the tipping point in Thanks to your support and unwavering commitment of Brady advocates across the country, we ve made lasting progress toward changing gun laws, changing the gun industry, and changing culture across America to save lives and make this a safer country. Our goal is bold: to cut the number of U.S. gun deaths in half by And through three innovative and impact-driven campaigns, we are succeeding. Our Finish the Job campaign is working to close the loopholes in our laws, expand Brady background checks and keep guns out of the hands of people we all agree shouldn t have them violent felons, domestic abusers, fugitives, and dangerously mentally ill people. Brady background checks have already blocked more than 2.4 million gun sales to prohibited purchasers, and we know they re an effective way to make our communities safer. We re also taking the fight to the streets and to the courts, holding accountable the bad apple gun dealers who sell 9 out of every 10 crime guns recovered and traced and we re winning. Our Legal Action Project has more than three decades of success in the courts, including some major victories in the last two years. Brady is also debunking the gun lobby lie that a gun in the home makes you safer, leading a new national conversation about the risks of suicides, homicides and unintentional shootings when guns are kept in the home. Educating America about these risks starts by talking about guns. 4 Holding bad apple Gun Dealers Accountable In 2013, the Brady Center filed a lawsuit on behalf of the family of Thomas Wortham IV, a Chicago police officer and Iraq War veteran who was shot and killed outside his parents home by gang members trying to rob him. A Chicago-area gun dealer had supplied a trafficking ring with the gun used to kill Tommy. Brady negotiated a settlement that included a host of new safety policies at this gun dealer, and those policies will keep criminals from getting their hands on guns. Make no mistake: these reforms will save lives. This is how change happens. The Worthams wanted to prevent other families from suffering the pain they ll feel for the rest of their lives because of gun violence...and they did.

6 Fighting to Finish the Job Former Northwestern University basketball coach Ricky Byrdsong was out for a jog while his young daughter and son rode their bikes alongside him. That Fourth of July weekend in 1999, Byrdsong s children watched as he was gunned down by a neo-nazi on a two-day shooting spree across Illinois. The shooter had tried to buy a gun from a licensed dealer but, because a protective order had been issued against him the sale was blocked by a Brady background check. He subsequently purchased two guns from a private seller without a background check, no questions asked. The same day he killed Byrdsong in front of his family, and killed or injured 11 others. The Brady law has blocked more than 2.4 million gun sales to people like the man who killed Ricky Byrdsong. Yet 40 percent of all gun sales in America still are not covered by federal law requiring a background check. Expanding Brady background checks will save lives. Today, Kelly Byrdsong is working alongside Brady to finish the job Jim and Sarah Brady started taking the fight to close the loopholes that allow dangerous people to get guns straight to the halls of Congress in She confronted gun lobby lap dog politicians in person, demanding to know how they could vote against lifesaving gun laws, knowing a simple background check could have saved her father s life.

8 Why We Talk About Guns Thirteen-year-old Cayman Naib was a normal kid happy, well liked, a soccer player who loved his dog. All that changed on March 4th, shortly after Cayman received an from school telling him he was in danger of failing a class. In the heat of the moment within 20 or 30 minutes Cayman took a gun from his house, walked into the woods, and killed himself. Cayman s father has purchased the gun decades ago for personal protection. He never thought it would be the cause of his worst nightmare. Too often, people with guns think not my kid. But the mere presence of a gun in the house makes families less safe more likely to die by homicide, suicide, or unintentional shooting. Brady is working alongside families like Cayman s to educate parents and encourage them to talk about the risks of guns in the home. We ve persuaded more than 19 million parents to ask whether there is a gun in the home where their children play, because asking saves kids. And we ve worked with public health and safety professionals to pioneer a new national conversation about gun safety.
