Doctors originally thought it was a stroke, but the Labs and CAT scan were negative. The next day an MRI was preformed showing a Left Temporal lobe abnormality. They thought she might have a viral infection in her brain, so she was sent to Boise to see a neurologist. While the DR's were waiting for the CF cultures results, they performed a SPEC scan which showed that instead of a virus, she has an inoperable Brain Tumor called a Gleoma. Marilyn is currently going through treatment at the Caldwell Cancer Center. 2 Ranch Horse Youth Jeana Hall is trying to compile a list of youth who are going to participate in the Ranch Horse Project Area this year. If you would either call Bobbi at the Extension Office at , or Jeana at and let them know of your interest, it would be greatly appreciated. You can also Jeana at Lazysage@hotmail.com Jeana is planning a training clinic with Angie Allum DMV. Angie will be going over the stomachs and intestines of the equine and bovine species at this clinic. This will be very informative and interactive. A date has not been set yet, but it will happen the end of March or the first of April. Watch for this upcoming activity date. Ranch Horse Members will be required to attend this training; other 4-H members are invited to attend. Important information and deadlines for Spring Horse Classis Entries with payment are due to the Malheur County Extension Office by March 29 th. This will allow time for us to compile all the paperwork and mail to the State Office by the April 5 th deadline! Please make checks payable to Malheur County 4-H Association Entries received by the deadline are $25 per contestant per event. Entries received between April 6 and April 12 are $30 per contestant per event. No entries accepted after April 12. The following link has all the required forms. There is a new release needed for the site where the event is being held. All the forms are up to date. Malheur County 4-H Scholarship Application Scholarships will be given by the Malheur County 4-H Association for the school year. Financial need will not be considered, however, a commitment for furthering the recipient's education the fall after high school graduation will be a requirement. The top finalists will be interviewed. Two scholarships will be awarded to deserving Malheur County 4-H members. 1. You must be a senior in high school; 2. You must have at least a 3.0 GPA; 3. Must be enrolled as a 4-H member for the H year; 4. Must have been enrolled in Malheur County 4-H for three consecutive years Submit the following to the Malheur County Volunteer Association c/o Malheur County Extension Office located at 710 SW 5th Avenue, Ontario, OR by April 2nd, 2013 by 4:00 pm. If selected as a finalist, you will be contacted by the selection committee for an interview. 4 Leader s Corner Guidelines for Naming 4-H clubs As a part of the Civil Rights and Affirmative Action laws and procedures, it is important for you to be aware of the ways that club names may imply or effect prejudicial views or policies of a 4-H club. Every reasonable effort must be made to insure that 4-H club names reflect an atmosphere and intent to be open to all interested youth and their families. No 4-H club or unit may have a name that could be perceived as prejudicial based on race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, national origin, age, marital status, disability or disabled veteran or Vietnam-era veteran status. Each of the following example names is inappropriate: Knitters For Christ- reference to religion is inappropriate Merry Maids- gender specific for females only Cherokee Champs- unless Cherokee is the name of the town or community this implies single race membership Ontario Animal Hospital Critters- uses a known commercial business name There may be some names that don t violate any of the Affirmative Action policies but which are still inappropriate. Please use good common sense in choosing a name. Choose a name that can be used for publicity and promotion of your activities without causing harm to the name and image of the 4-H Youth Development Program. Notice All Volunteers It is important for all volunteers to turn in registration forms ASAP. Leaders should not be meeting with 4-H clubs until they have been cleared. Volunteers are not covered on insurance until registration is complete. All volunteers, leaders or committee members must be cleared through a background check to be around 4-H members. Notice to 4-H Leaders who have members taking hogs to the fair: Members showing hogs were given the incorrect cool form at registration. The correct form can be found on the Extension Web site. Please make sure members have the correct form when they go to their producer to purchase hogs for the market sale at fair. (Also included in this newsletter.) 4-H Association Meeting The Malheur County 4-H Association will meet Monday, April 29, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. at the Extension Office meeting room. (No March meeting.) All Leaders, Teen Leaders, Volunteers & interested community members are encouraged to attend these meetings to keep up on current information. Many items are discussed which relate to the 4-H program. Junior Livestock Sale Committee The Junior Livestock Sale Committee will be meeting on Monday, March 11th, 2013, at 6:30 p.m. in the Extension Office meeting room. Visitors are always welcome to attend this meeting.

(Thank you Jack Robertson for the use of the facilities and to Jeri Philpott for doing the weighing.) February 25, 17 steers were weighed in at Jordan Valley. (Thanks Nick Usabel for taking care of this job for us! Thank you to Eiguren Family for the use of your scale.) So, 121 Steers total are being fed and trained for show at the 2013 fair.
