1 Page 1 of 23 TO ALL ASA COMM UNIT VETS In the recent Gutleut Kaserne article I mentioned that Tom Vanderhoof was on a trip to Eastern Europe and planned a layover in Frankfurt. Here are some great photos that Tom and his wife Pat took in Frankfurt. We really appreciate his sharing them with his ASA brothers. If you wish to see an aerial view of the pictures Tom took at Gutleut Kaserne, I have added a Google link at the bottom of the page. Again, our thanks to Tom and Pat! We spent a full day of walking, talking, shopping and seeing what old sites we remember were still standing.

3 Page 3 of 23 Inside kaserne looking at where the mess hall stood. 10 and 11 is the refurbished front of Gutleutkaserne. The building at an angle contains state finance offices. Also the blue, white, red, yellow and green dots are part of the state finance and contained underground public parking lot that we used a lot.

11 Page 11 of 23 This is the view I had from my window in Gutleutkaserne. At that time only the top two or three floors of the control tower could be seen no train tracks or roads were visible from window. Remember there was a small road between our billets and the brick wall. Okay here it is Kennedy Kaserne at the corners of Bremer and Eschers-heimer Land Strasses. It is now an old folks home. The structure was completely torn down, the only thing I found remaining was the cut in the curb for the driveway into the Kaserne.

Having walked from Kennedy Kaserne between the Officers Club and IG Farben down the stairs and between the two houses on the small side dead end street. We how turn on the dead end street where Dachsbau was located. Here we find the miniature golf course that is no longer there. In its place is a reflection pond and pagoda.

14 Page 14 of 23 This should be site of the FAMOUS Dachsbau where many of us spent many a hour. Now there is a pagoda in the Korean Gardens. - _ Corner of Miquelallee and Hansaalle. That is the mess hall we used when we lived at Kennedy Kaserne and for mid night chow when we lived at Gutleutkaserne.

16 Page 16 of 23 WAC Circle, Main PX stood where the gray building is now. Behind the PX was the commissary, AFN Frankfurt studio (after the move from Hochst Kaserne) and Service (gas) Station. MP's moved from corner of Gutleutkaseme to Eschersheimer Land Strasse.

17 Page 17 of 23 Stark Cafe on Eschersheimer Land Strasse up from Kennedy Kaserne. All those chocolate goodies and cakes. It is now a Mexican Restaurant. Looking down Eschersheimer Land Strasse toward Kennedy Kaseme.

18 Page 18 of 23 At this site there stood several old houses. This is where I spent my first night on the ground in Germany the 21st Replacement Battalion on Cronstetten Strasse. This site is across the street from Kennedy Kaserne. 21st RP moved to Gutleut when we moved from Gutleut to Kennedy Kaserne. Now it is part of the school that complained about us not closing the curtains or looking at the girls across Eschersheimer Land Strasse. I think this bar was called Steffi's just down from Kennedy Kaseme and across Eschersheimer Land Strasse going to the Eschenheimer Tor. Now its a Chinese restaurant.
